Marching band is just as much a sport as soccer, football, etc. you don't just play an instrument, you also run and exersize. You have to be physically active to be in marching band. Majorettes and color guard and drumline work 3 times as hard as anyone on the football team. And regular marching and members work just as hard if not harder than soccer players.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, a sport is "An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment".[1] Although marching band does indeed involve skill, it is a bit of an overstatement to call carrying around and playing a flute 'physical exertion'. Additionally, the primary function of marching band is noncompetitive - for example, marching bands often perform at halftime of football games, just as cheerleaders perform on the sidelines during the game. Neither cheerleading nor marching band are sports because they typically lack competitive aspect; whereas hockey, football, basketball, or soccer are always competitive, marching band is not. Even in band 'competitions', there is no real direct competition - each band does their act, and then judges judge it. What one band does has impact to what any other does.[2] According to my opponent, any activity that requires you to be 'physically active' and 'work hard' is a sport. By that logic, bricklaying, weed eating, war, debate, and line dancing would all be considered sports. Do you want to live in a world where line dancing is considered a sport? I hope not. In short, band is not a sport because it is not necessarily physically exerting and does not focus on competition; even when it does, bands don't really 'compete' so much as play a pre-decided routine. Additionally, my opponent's arguments are faulty as they would mean many things that are clearly not sports would become sports. Reasons for voting decision: Even though, Marching Band is really a sport, I have no choice, but to vote for Con because his statements were unchallenged.
