The College Board is a highly influential force in today's educational environment. After all, They hold a virtual monopoly on education by controlling the SAT and the AP exams. As a high school student, I have personally seen again and again how the College Board grows stronger.

The College Board is a negative force in society. Its educational monopoly and the money it makes off of educational struggle is a plague on society. The fact that the executives at the College Board make millions, Yet every student who wants to go to college must pay for their exams, Is a terrible part of education being influenced by corporatism.

Well even if the college board didn't exist, We still might have to pay for the tests. The college board website is nice because it keeps all your test scores in one place using only one account, So you don't have to juggle multiple websites and accounts. It's also nice because you only get to use one site to register for all SAT tests and AP exams, So you don't have to worry about not remembering websites, Passwords, And usernames. Plus if the college board doesn't do it, Someone else will. The college board website also has a couple of nice things on it. It allows you to match your interests to potential colleges of your interest and gives you some info on particular colleges, This is called the College Search. It also allows you to search up careers and majors, And it will give you everything you need to know about them.

The main problem with the College Board is, Although somebody else would certainly do it if they didn"t, They do it for profit. Organizations like Khan Academy do education free, And sites like Wikipedia try to offer free information as well. This nonprofit model is the best for tackling education, With education being something that should not be done for profit. The nature of the College Board is it does not want to work with rivals, As corporations rarely do. While a nonprofit just wants to do right by those it serves, The College Board wants to turn a profit, And by this it has an incentive to have a monopoly.

The interface that the College Board has is actually one of the most inefficient. Their profit motive comes up once again, Meaning students must pay for something as simple as having their SAT scores sent to colleges. As they are the only provider that most colleges accept, They can crank out as much money as possible from modern students. As someone who has had problems with accounts and scores on the College Board, I can say that it is a recklessly broken system. There is no incentive for them to improve their interface, As they have knocked all competition out of the market, All in pursuit of profit. Something like getting into college should not be an overcomplicated profit system.

Well, If it knocked all competition out of the market, Then it is not the only one that is there for profit. Usually, If a competitor knocks out another competitor, It suggests that one the human population prefers one competitor over the other. If the College Board did lock all competitors out of business, Then the human population might have believed that the College Board is the best one. Plus, There probably isn't going to be an organization, System, Or website like College Board that's going to be created for the next 20 years, So you would have to stick with College Board. College Board also has a student search program. You can participate in it by checking a box. The student search program basically allows you to be on a colleges mailing list. Although it could be a little annoying( I got over 100 emails from colleges on my phone), But it could allow you to discover what colleges are more suitable for you. Plus college board makes the admissions process easier for admissions officers.

All of the services you are discussing being rendered could be done for free, By a non-profit. It would be fully possible, But nobody is taking up the task. The reason that nobody is doing so is because the College Board provides the illusion of being a good company that helps people. The other reason is that they are supported by the government as a form of virtual monopoly. Because public colleges largely require the services of the College Board, They encourage their monopoly. This is a dangerous thing for a government to be doing, Virtually encouraging a monopoly.

You have to trust that what the US gov't is doing has to be correct because the US gov't is set up so that it would be less likely to do something unlawful. Plus if the college board provides the illusion of a good company and everybody supporting it, Then it probably is a good company. Plus, If we get rid of the college board, It would probably take several years to develop another system like it. Without the college board, Maybe you'll have to deal with multiple websites with multiple accounts, Well maybe. These are the reasons why we can't take the risk of removing the college board.
