Con will have the task of proving that Men in the United States are treated more unfairly than Women are.

Pro will have the task of proving that Women in the United States are treated more unfairly than Men.

This debate is concerning present day status of equality between Men and Women in the United States only. Round 1 will be for acceptance only. Round 2 will be for opening arguments. Round 3 will contain rebuttals and if needed, additional points of argument. Round 4 will be continued rebuttals. Round 5 will be for summarizing each argument and will not contain any rebuttals but focus solidly on the case each has made in summary.

Disqualification criteria: Citing false or otherwise unfounded statistical data. Making generalized statements such as "Most people believe" without providing proof. Offering any statement that can be considered illogical beyond reasonable doubt. Attempting to use opinion to justify opinion.

Hello I accept your challenge and agree to the rules.
Debate Round No. 1

Thanks goes to my opponent for agreeing to the terms of the debate, I look forward to hashing this out rationally and seeing the outcome.

My arguments concerning the proof that Men in the United states are treated more unfairly than Women will be focused the following areas:

Fathers vs Mothers in U.S. child custody battles
Men vs Women in the criminal justice system
Men vs Women concerning privacy matters
Men vs Women concerning abortion
Men vs Women portrayed by social media
Men vs Women concerning "Men only" laws
Men vs Women concerning medical treatment

1. Child custody battles - While the statistical data is always behind (As you'll see from the demographics) the reports are as accurate as they can be with respect to how difficult it can to be collect the data. The latest report available from government census is 2007 and 2008. In 2007/2008, 82.6% of custodial parents (Parents who physically possess the child) were female while 17.4% were male. It is reported from the census that this proportion hasn't changed since 1994. This means that in 13 years, females have dominated the child custody field in all aspects. This data can be found here:
and here

With the data in view, it can be logically stated that Females have the advantage in child custody however, no amount of logical deduction can justify the disproportion. There is simply no legitimate reason for Women to dominate child custody battles by the standard of equality between Men and Women...but they do non-the-less. Women are victorious in a majority of child custody battles because that is how it's always been and a majority of judges simply believe that it's for the best: According to Los Angeles divorce consultant Jayne Major:

"Divorced men are often devastated by the loss of their children. It"s a little known fact that in the United States men initiate only a small number of the divorces involving children. Most of the men I deal with never saw their divorces coming, and they are often treated very unfairly by the family courts.""
Consult any child custody attorney and they will admit the same.

Men have even been jailed for paying too much child support as seen here:

Men vs Women in the Criminal Justice System -
It is reported from several demographic and statistical data collection agencies that Men have been and still are charged with crimes and then punished more harshly than women have been and still are for the same crimes. Fines posed by the court system have been recorded as higher for Men than Women in the exact same violations of the law.

The average sentences for crime by Gender: Female - 18.51 months. Male - 51.52 months.

205 (And growing) wrongly convicted people have been exonerated by DNA evidence since the beginning of the Innocence Project. 204 of the wrongly convicted were Males. Most of which were falsely imprisoned for rape.

Valid research puts the estimated false rape reporting rate at 41%

Since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, there have been over 1,200 executions in the United States. Eleven of them were Female. Women commit by DOJ estimates, 10% of all murders, are involved in 35% of all domestic homicides (Meaning they get other people to kill for them) and nearly 30% of murders where the victim was another family member.

The CDC reports that in cases of non-reciprocal intimate partner violence (One directional) that Females are more than twice as likely to be the aggressor. 70% to 29% respectively. The CDC also lists Male victims of domestic violence in California and are, by law, excluded from domestic violence shelter services. Only one shelter in Lancaster, CA accepts men and has been extensively harassed for doing so.

Statistics show that the victims of rape in the United States are a majority Male. Female rape victim statistics have always included the rapes that occur inside the criminal justice system (In jails and prisons) however the Male rape victim statistics are largely not. This is because if they were, Male rape victim statistics would show that Men are raped more than Women each year as you can see from the demographics listed in the websites below. Additionally, the victims of rape related to childhood sexual abuse are more often Male than Female - 6.7% to 5.6% respectively. 94% of sexually abused youth in correctional facilities reported being abused by Female staff. Concerning family violence, when Men seek assistance after experiencing intimate partner violence, they frequently encounter a lack of services and workers in the domestic violence industry whereas Women can find no shortage of assistance in the U.S.

Men vs Women in Privacy Matters -
Female reporters are allowed in Male athlete locker rooms, but privacy and respect for Female athletes is demanded and given with no exception. Without having to cite evidence, you can drive along almost any highway in the U.S. and find a billboard with a large picture of a bare chested Man however, a picture of a bare chested Woman would be considered pornography and would be the cause of a large lawsuit. View this picture and then tell me what would happen if the genders were reversed

Concerning Abortion -
Men have absolutely no rights whatsoever in the matter of Abortion, even though the abortion concerns the life of a Child that belongs to two people. Women have the only choice in the matter of abortion and the termination of a human life.

Portrayal by social media - Example: Everybody Loves Raymond. If Raymond were actually Renee thus changing the name of the show, what response do you think would come from the Women of the United States? "Sexist" is a word that comes to mind when trying to describe a TV show that depicts a Woman who behaves the way most Men in TV shows behave. The social media also holds the responsibility of portraying half naked Males on TV and in literature, the same acts would be illegal for Women yet it's fine if it's a Male...only because it's a Male.

Men only Laws -
Almost all male U.S. citizens, and male immigrants living in the U.S., who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service.

Women Aren't Required to Register

Selective Service law as it's written now refers specifically to "male persons" in stating who must register and who would be drafted. For women to be required to register with Selective Service, Congress would have to amend the law.

The constitutionality of excluding women was tested in the courts. A Supreme Court decision in 1981, Rostker v. Goldberg, held that registering only men did not violate the due process clause of the Constitution. While women officers and enlisted personnel serve with distinction in the U.S. Armed Forces, women have never been subject to Selective Service registration or a military draft in America. Women who served in the past, and those who serve today in ever increasing numbers, all volunteered for military service.

As proved from the Selective Service System, registration is the law. A man who fails to register may, if prosecuted and convicted, face a fine of up to $250,000 and/or a prison term of up to five years.

We hear a lot about the historical oppression of women"s voting rights, but few if any women who were born in the 20th century were ever without the right to vote in their lifetime, upon reaching legal voting age. On the other hand, around 2400 hundred California men (42% of CA men killed in Vietnam) gave their life for their country without being allowed by their country to vote. The exact number is 2,381. Four of the twelve Iwo Jimo flag raisers died for their country without their country ever allowing them the right to vote.

Women cannot be Flashers, the law applies to Men only.

Health care -
Men are subject to discrimination in health care.

Men today die on average 6 years sooner than women. In 1920 the variance was one year. The death rates for prostate and breast cancer are similar, but because men die of other things more frequently-accidents ,war, heart disease etc., there are fewer men left to die of prostate cancer. This is akin to saying people from a nation like Zimbabwe are immune to Alzheimer"s- but in fact they die of other things before they can get old enough to contract Alzheimer"s.

To date, there are numerous federal offices on women"s health, and not one for men. Also, the lion"s share of gender specific medical research is done on behalf of Women.

I have some unforeseen events in my life can we delay this debate?

Depends how you would define unfair, I believe women's lives are made harder than men's by society. Is that good enough to debate with you?
