I had a classmate tell me that this was not a true experiment because the electrons are a wave of particles and by hitting them with particles when we observed them we disrupted it. I believe that electrons are full waves and change into particles upon further observation.

An electron is a particle which is spinning at the speed of light and therefore doesn't really exist in our dimension. You can only detect it when it hits something. Thus, It is similar to or the same as light. Note - You can't see light until it hits a solid object.
