Are people basically selfish?

My answer, as you could tell from my position, is yes, people are basically selfish.

1. History
If you look throughout history, specifically tyrannical rulers, revolts, and wars, you'll see that people desire something and are willing to hurt others to get it. Examples include the Spanish Conquistadors, the Aztecs, Rome, etc...

2. Current Day Events
If you want to see if people are selfish or not, then I want to you to look at the Mainstream news. It's covered with war, tension between counties, and terrorist attacks. A great example would be the civil unrest in the Middle East.

3. Religion
Personal definition of Religion: The quest to find God.
If you look at various religions, including Islam, Christianity, Buddha, etc, you'll find that they agree with me. In fact, you'll see that part of the goal they're trying to reach is to be freed from your own desires. Even Atheistic Evolution (Which counts as a religion under the definition, they say there's no God to discover) says survival of the fittest.

It's clear with these examples that people are naturally selfish, and in order for us to advance in Society, we need to recognize that, which is why a vote for Pro is warranted.

P.S., Just a quick question for the opponent (I'll be happy to answer any questions they may ask). What is your religion/beliefs?

I was playing the simpsons arcade machine once and i ran out of coins and some dude gave me some coins for it and didn't want anything back

When you do a nice thing for a person, doesn't it make you feel nice and like you're a better person overall?
In this case, he gave you those coins to make himself look and feel better.

some times u don't give a crap lol and u just pass someone some free stuff
Debate Round No. 2

A common misconception is that when a person gives something freely, they have no intention of getting anything.
The thing is, they do receive something. Social status. Not only does everyone sees you as a caring soul, but a good person that should be looked up to. The coin might not be worth a lot to him, but he still got something out of giving you the money. A sense of being a good person.

look up persona 5 and then readd its plot summary and u will know that not all actiona re selfish and sometime u just gotta do the right thing.

By your round 2 logic, wouldn't they be doing that just for the good feeling of helping other people?

Timnar, do you think there is ANY action a person could take that would not be selfish?

Reasons for voting decision: Pro gave note of the examples of history which Con did not refute. Con gave an example of a man giving Con coins without expecting anything in return, but Pro was able to note that it is possible for selfish intentions to be in such an action and gave good feeling and social stature as reasons. Con argued sometimes people just give freely but did not give argument to justify this. Pro wins as Con did not argue against Pros arguments , while Pro pointed out flaws in Cons arguments. In closing ah well that's how it goes, and I like Undertale.
