 Pro Preface: A fun debate over who is the strongest character in One Piece. I will be saying that Shanks is the strongest. In Round 1, my opponent should name a character that he/she thinks is the strongest. Then, we will be debating over which of the two characters is the strongest. Also note, You can only choose a character that is currently living. Pro I thank my opponent for accepting this debate. I have no doubt that it will be fun and challenging! ===================================================================== Framework: There are two thing that need to be mentioned before I dwelve straight into my contentions, and that is the answer to this question: Haki or Devil Fruit(s), which one is more powerful? The answer is simple: Haki. But allow me to explain why: Let’s go back to the beginning of the series when we were at East Blue. At the beginning of the series Devil Fruits were simply myths. If you were to tell someone that you had a Devil Fruit, they would be in great amazement, and would state that you were a super-powerful person. However, as the series went on and we got into the Grand Line, we started to see that everyone had a Devil Fruit. There were loads of Devil Fruit users left and right, and just mere fact of owning a Devil Fruit was not enough to prove that you were strong - everyone had Devil Fruits so you really weren’t any more special than the next person. As the series progressed we got introduced to Haki, what it was, and what the three different types were. In the Grand Line, Haki is something that no one really knows of, but in the New World Haki is well aware by everyone. Haki is more powerful than Devil Fruits when compared. And Shanks - He has the greatest Haki of every person in One Piece. Secondly, We can’t just look at Destructive Power between these two characters; we have to look at the overall combat ability. It’s also Intelligence, Speed, etc. You have to look at all of the skills - not just Destructive Power And now, onto my contentions: Contention 1: It takes years to master the powers of a Devil Fruit The thing is that Blackbeard has only had ~3 years with his Devil Fruits. And it takes many many years to be able to master the Devil Fruit Powers When Luffy was a little kid, he was training with Ace and the others on the island, just to get to where he is today with his Devil Fruit ability. Even some other characters like Crocodile took many years to master his ability. Even if we look at Ace, who got his Devil Fruit after he left the island, he was pretty powerful. He could do a lot of cool attacks, but even he hadn’t mastered the technique that other logia users have, and that is to be able to move and travel as his own element. Crocodile, Kizaru, and Aokiji, just to name a few, could do this - but Ace couldn’t. Why? Because he hadn’t mastered his Devil Fruit to the fullest extent yet. Blackbeard has yet to master his Devil Fruit Powers, due to the fact that he hasn’t had them long enough. I don’t think, that at this moment, he could be considered the strongest. Contention 2: Shank’s Raw Physical power is immense Also, Shank’s sword is nothing special. It’s a very typical sword, that you would expect a regular marine soldier to have - not the most powerful Pirate in the World to have. There is nothing special about it, it’s just a regular saber, but he is still so good at using it. Contention 3: Strongest Haki in the One Piece World Shanks first used his Haki when the Sea King came, and bit his arm off. It has been ~10 years since then. Shanks has had a long time to perfect his Haki to the Max. We can see some examples as to why his Haki is so immense: 1. Encounter with Whitebeard - Conquerors Haki knocks out people, as far as we have seen. When Shanks was on Whitebeard’s ship, the ship was cracking. He was barely trying at all. He was just walking, and the Ship was breaking. Furthermore, people in Whitebeards crew were being knocked out, and once again - Shanks wasn’t even trying. 2. Stopped Akainu’s Magma Fist - Akainu was in Full Motion! This also proves that he has Busosoku Haki. Akainu was coming straight at Coby, and then... Shanks comes in. He blocks Akainu's Magma fist like it was nothing. 3. Weak Saber - As I mentioned earlier, Shanks has a really crappy sword. Yet it was still able to stop Akainu’s Magma Fist! And it was also able to stop Whitebeard’s Strike. Once again shows How much Haki he must have put into that strike. Contention 4: Blackbeard himself stated that he was not ready to face Shanks Once Blackbeard was able to obtain the Guro Guro No Mi, he went crazy. He was on a power-high trying to destroy ships, and he wanted to destroy the island. Senjoku was trying to stop him, but Blackbeard still didn’t stop. But when Shanks came, Blackbeard himself stated that he was not ready to fight Shanks yet. He essentially admits that Shanks is more powerful than him. Even with 2 Devil Fruits, he still didn’t think he had the skill/power to defeat Shanks.  Con Thanks Pro, I will now move on to my arguments. 1. Blackbeard had the advantage in an earlier fight Blackbeard and Shanks had already fought once, at an unknown time after Roger's death. You can see a weapon that Blackbeard used to use here http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net... and the weapon he uses matches shank's scar. Also, shank's scar seemed to tingle when confronting Blackbeard, which means we can safely assume that the scar was given to Shanks by Blackbeard. There are no noticeable scars or wounds on Blackbeard, which means that Blackbeard was not given any lasting wounds. With that I make the conclusion that Blackbeard had the advantage in an earlier fight. 2.Blackbeard's devil fruits Blackbeard's first devil fruit, the Yami Yami no mi, lets him control darkness and gravity. He can pull or push things away, and can create a vortex that sucks things into another space. His second devil fruit lets him create earthquakes wherever he wants, and can add them to his arm to make an explosion. There is also a high chance that Blackbeard gained more devil fruit powers in the 2 year timeskip, as he also got to learn how to use his powers then. Also, Shanks is at a disadvantage since he only has one arm. 3. Blackbeard has immense endurance Blackbeard's devil fruit ability has a cost: It makes all attacks more painful. Blackbeard took an explosive punch that was amplified from Whitebeard, considered the strongest man in the world, and he didn't even lose consciousness. He even took a slash from the same man's giant sword without any lasting damage. He also took two spears of fire directly to his chest and simply shook off the attack, and was hit by a giant Sengoku in his Diabutsu form and came out with minor injuries. This means he can survive a long fight with shanks and cannot be finished in one blow. Rebuttal time Pro. |

Pro I thank my opponent for his argument. Now onto the Rebuttals. ============================================================================ 1. Blackbeard had the advantage in an earilier fight There are clear problems with this point. First, I do acknowledge the fact that Blackbeard gave Shanks the scar at one point in time, but that doesn't meant that he is more powerful right now. The thing is that earlier in the series, Buggy gave Luffy a hard time. Luffy and Zoro both had to work hard in order to defeat Buggy. Now, Luffy would beat Buggy with one hit. You see, since we don't know when exactly this encounter occured, we don't know how the power levels of each person was at that point in time. We can't say that just because something happened back in the day, that it still applies currently. It's understandable that Blackbeard did better in the earlier fight, but that doesn't mean Blackbeard is more powerful right now. 2. Blackbeard's Devil Fruits I said it before, and I'll say it again - it takes YEARS in order to master ones Devil Fruit. I've already given sufficient examples of this in my last argument. It's understood that his Devil Fruit powers should be taken into consideration, but I still don't think he is powerful enough. Furthermore, even with the 2 Devil Fruits that he had - he admits that he still wasn't ready to fight Shanks. The fact that he lost one arm, actually doesn't mean anything. The strike he had with Whitebeard, he stopped Akainu's magma punch, and he did it all with one hand. 3. Blackbeard has immense endurance My opponent's point here is that Blackbeard "can survive a long fight with Shanks and cannot be finished with one blow." That may be true, and we can assume that if they were to fight, it would be a very long battle, and wouldn't end in a couple of quick punches. However, in response to the endurance, once again comes Shanks' Haki. Just with Shanks being there and not even trying to do anything, Blackbeard will have to summon up a decent amount of willpower. As I stated before Shanks was knocking out people from Whitebeard's crew like it was nothing. And once Shanks actually uses his Haki to his fullest extent, and strikes with his saber with Haki imdued in it - it will pack quite a punch! =========================================================================== Look forward to opponent's rebuttals =========================================================================== Con Now for my rebuttals. Contention 1: It takes years to master the powers of a Devil Fruit Does that really matter? You don't need to master your devil fruits just to fight with them. His Yami Yami no mi is considered unique, even for a Logia type, and his second devil fruit, the Gura Gura no mi, has been widely regarded as the strongest Paramecia devil fruit. Even after training for 3 years you can still be extremely strong. Contention 2: Shank’s Raw Physical power is immense Why did Mihawk stop having daily duels with Shanks? Because he lost interest after Shanks lost his arm. This means that his physical powers have lowered considerably. Shanks sword, according to the wiki, looks bigger than a regular saber. This means that there is a possibility it was specially made. Contention 3: Strongest Haki in the One Piece World Right now, I'm going to try to prove that the person with the stronges Haki is Rayleigh, not Shanks, because I know Blackbeard doesn't have it. This is just to prove that Shanks doesn't have the strongest Haki. 1. The auction house- Rayleigh's haki was able to knock out everyone at the auction house, and pick out some people still standing. He was also able to check which monsters on the island he was training with Luffy in were stronger than Luffy. 2.Redirecting Kizaru's attack- Kizaru was in Full Motion! This also proves that he has Busosoku Haki. Kizaru was coming straight at Zoro, and then... Rayleigh comes in. He redirects Kizaru's lightspeed kick like it was nothing. 3.Rayleigh's sword- Rayleigh's sword is a straight-bladed sword, and has no remarkable qualities, just like Shank's. Shanks has had 10 years of training? Rayleigh has had over 30. Contention 4: Blackbeard himself stated that he was not ready to face Shanks There has been a 2-year timeskip. Like you yourself have stated before, just because one person is more powerful than another at one time, it doesn't mean they are still at the same power after. |

I've watched definitely over a hundred anime. Many namely few know. While i will agree Pro won without a doubt. Shanks is considerably not the strongest character in one piece. Possibly strongest still alive up-to-date. However, i would like to say Dragon but seeing that there's a lot of details & info that haven't been provide so far i would have to argue no other than the " Dark King" Silver Rayleigh. He is the true character known as far with the strongest haki and not to mention is nothing less than a legend in comparison to any pirates, marines, characters whoever you may so pick other than those considered to rival those of the legendary Roger Pirates. Which are few and you all know there names. But that's just my opinion.
