I think Piracy should be legalised. Here are the reasons why; 1. Free media files. High quality music, movies and other media will be free for use. Consumers use less money on entertainment and can focus that money on neccessary goods like food and water. This means consumer lifestyle in Country X will be improved. 2. Media files such as music and other things are binary information with tiny amounts of mass. Why do we have to pay more just because the file is bigger? Like hd movies and hd music. We already have data charges and wifi charges when downloading large files. 3. Those who make and produce such things are already paid well by advertisements and production companies. Youtubers distribute more than 20 gigs and hours of video lengths to millions of people; for free. They're videos can be viewed in HD quality as well without having to pay a dime. 4. Why is it illegalised in the first place? Sure it is an infringement of copyright but why must someone be punished for uploading products they have already bought and own? (assuming that they have bought it of course.) Why must someone pay fees and serve years and months in Jail just for allowing someone with low privileges to be able to watch videos he/she might enjoy. Nowadays everything is crazy expensive so of course people are tempted to torrent and watch movies for free. These are the people demanding the torrents and yet it is the distributors that get punished severely? "Criminal penalties for first-time offenders can be as high as five years in prison and $250,000 in fines. Civil penalties can run into many thousands of dollars in damages and legal fees. The minimum penalty is $750 per song." - http://www.riaa.com... These penalties are ridiculous. So much punishment for file sharing? Why? Five years spent in a cell is like five years taken away from your life span. Overall I just don't see why piracy is illegal and I think it should be legalised for the benefit of all consumers and under privileged/ lower class people in this age of technology. My opponent stated this round will not be acceptance an therefore I will be getting straight into my cross. I. Cross-Examination I will be addressing all the reasons provided in the order they were presented. 1. This is a matter of prioritization. First, an individual must consider whether he has enough money for necessities (rent, food, utilities) then he proceeds to decided if he will have enough left over to purchase entertainment. Pro is assuming an individual places internet entertainment over basic necessity. This is rather irrational as any common man would say that food and water are far more important that any form of internet media. As such, said common man would pay for food and water before considering purchasing entertainment. Not the other way around. 2. The value of these media files is not based on their mass nor size. We pay more for higher quality music because we are getting a higher quality product. The same situation would apply to any item. The lower the quality, the less it should cost. The data charges and Wi-Fi charges paid are not seen by the producers of the media. Those fees go to the internet provider. The purpose of those charges is too make consumers pay for the commodity being provided. The provider isn't paying the owners of the media for the pirated download. 3. Actually, Pro has this backwards. Those who make and produce this media are paying to advertise and market their product. The producers are hoping said advertising will lead to purchases of their media. The makers of the movie don't make money off of advertising, they lose money from it, even more so by advertising a free product. YouTuber's are making videos with their own equipment and time. Making home videos still requires a video camera and place to film. There are still expenses. Full length films require many more expenses and are therefore far more expensive. YouTube pays some of it's partners because those partners allow YouTube to advertise on their videos. YouTube itself is making more money than the YouTuber because they are being paid by the producers of the media they are advertising. The difference between Youtube and movies is that YouTube advertises on the product while movies advertise for the product. 4. It was made illegal simply due to the fact that upon buying the product, the consumer makes an agreement to enjoy the media privately. Distribution of this media allows those who do not own the product to use it without payment. Using a product without payment (stealing) is illegal for obvious reasons. II. Construct Here I will explain why Piracy should stay legalised and how it is hurting those who produce media. No Money No Product The simple reason why these companies make media like movies and music is due to the fact they want to make money. They also need to make money in order to produce more content. If company X makes Movie X and spends X dollars, nobody purchases Movie X, then company X cannot recoup the X amount of dollars the spent making the Movie X. Now, company X has no money to producer more movies and is left to fail. In order for a business to produce content, it needs money. The only way for it to get money is if consumers pay for their product. Piracy allows all consumers to "consume" media without payment, and hurts the producer as a result. In a world were media is free, there would be no media. Nobody could afford to make it. III. Closing Remarks Pro's reason(s) to support piracy are lacking. The first being irrational and the following lacking proper information. In order for my opponent to make a return, he needs to rebut my above argument and provide some more solid reasons why Piracy should be legalised. I await his response. |

I'm having trouble understanding what you are saying. It is important to use proper grammar when conveying ideas to others. Otherwise your idea becomes meaningless and unecessary.
