I can visually see the benefits of having teachers arm with a hand held gun. But their are many down falls towards having teachers with lethal weapons, because a child life is always at risk whether you believe or not. So I believe teachers shouldn't even be given the opportunity to have a lethal weapon because there are a lot of different circumstances could happen.

I accept. I think that it is okay for teachers who have proper training and all that to have guns so that they can protect kids during a potential school shooting.

"The US is ranked around 30th in the world for violent gun deaths on a personal capita basis. Meaning per 100k deaths with gun that are pre meditated we are ranked in the top 15 percent in the world. This is not an overall death comparison , it's per capita. When you look at countries in the bottom percentile (least gun deaths ). You see places like China , Japan, Australia, Iceland , Sweeden, etc. All of which have heavy regulated gun laws and the only reason you are allowed to own guns in those countries is for sport. Not only that but you are subjected to very intense background checks , mental health tests , and are forced to go back in for mental health reviews ever few years. So yes there is a huge correlation with reduced deaths from stricter regulation (including background checks and much more ). It's literally common sense. More guns will cause more deaths , period. Especially when it's not regulated and given to responsible people. Every statistic involving us and gun crime on a personal capita basis confirms this when compared with the rest of the world. Pro gun proponents will cite states that allow concealed carry laws as having reduced gun deaths because they function as a deterrent but when you compare those states to other other cities and countries on a personal capita basis , even our best states have between 5x to 50x the amount of violent gun deaths." this was by another member of this site Mikal.

"chance against a person being killed in a mass shooting in the United States was about 517,000:1. "

So really they is no need to arm teachers. It will be greater risk involved with guns.

Arming teacher would not be the answer to your solution.

We can do a separate debate on this if you want. Anyway, here is my response.

"And you think teacher would be brave enough to go after the shooter?" Well, if they're willing to jump in front of their kids to absorb all of the shooter's bullets, they are probably willing to shoot the shooter...

"By leaving the gun out somewhere..." And that is why only responsible teachers should be allowed to have guns.

"And it won't deter a mass shooter." Again NINETY EIGHT PERCENT of mass public shootings are in gun free zones! If they wanted to kill more people, they could go to a movie theater or something. They don't do that because they realize someone there could have a gun! It deters them.

"And if you went to school there they would know which teachers have a gun or not and could plan accordingly." The teachers don't have to tell their students whether they have a gun or not! Also, you could say the same thing about having security guards! Anyway, it still helps and makes it harder for the shooter.

"Guns don't stop violence." Yes, they can. Remember the recent church shooting? A neighbor got his gun, came to the church and killed the shooter before police had time to arrive! His gun did stop violence! Also, if "Guns don't stop violence," then why would cops themselves have them?

And you think teacher would be brave enough to go after the shooter? If some cops and a arm security guard cant what make you think teachers with a gun can.

Plus teachers with guns could have accident too, they will make a mistake. By leaving the gun out somewhere or having a student take the gun away. It will be a dangerous situation there. And it won't deter a mass shooter. Why because once they snap they are unpredictable. And still go to a school rather teachers ate arm or not. And if you went to school there they would know which teachers have a gun or not and could plan accordingly. Guns don't stop violence. So you are risking more people with teachers having them.

I never said teachers would be FORCED to carry guns. Only that capable and willing teachers could if they wanted to do so. I just don't think schools should be gun-free zones. If you were a criminal, wouldn't you rather go to schools where you know no teachers or whoever will have guns? If maybe that school wasn't a gun free zone, you probably wouldn't go there. Just the fact that teachers COULD have guns could deter you. In fact, a stunning 98% of public mass shooting occur in gun-free zones, NINETY-EIGHT percent! That has to tell you something. Also, 81% of police officers are in favor of arming teachers/principals. "most teachers are against having guns." They don't have to have guns if they don't want them. "If you want a securtiy team with liscences and actually train with a gun that might be a different debate." There was a security guard there... too bad he was to cowardly to go in until at least 4 minutes later! About 3 other officers came to the school and just SAT OUTSIDE WAITING FOR THE KILLER TO BE DONE WITH HIS MURDERING SPREE AND COME OUT!

So how would a 60 year old teacher deal with a bigger teenage? Or how would a small teacher do with a bigger guy? You don't think teachers can't make a mistake and leave a gun somewhere by accident? You are asking for more trouble than it worth. And by the way most teachers are against having guns. http://www.latimes.com...

If you want a security team with licences and actually train with a gun that might be a different debate.

Well, instead of waiting 5+ minutes for the cops to arrive, and just wait at their cars (about 4 cops did this in the recent shooting), liscensed teachers could get out of their classroom, find the killer, and shoot them. Or, they wait and shoot the killer if he/she tries to come into the classroom. That would be much better than the teacher just having to jump in front of the kids and hope to absorb all the bullets.

Teachers do not need more guns. I'm sorry, but how are you helping to prevent people from dying by simply adding more guns to a gun violence problem?
