Society has created social standards and "norms" that people believe they must conform to. Many people encounter societal pressure from media and standards by which they should abide to. For example, Social media is a large platform which sets expectations of what people should look lie and how they should act. They may send messages that say "if you look like this or if you have this product, You will feel much happier". Therefore, People become obsessed with following this message media presents and obsessed with meeting this standards such as having a perfect body. However, These expectations are often unrealistic and therefore people often end up blaming themselves for failing to achieve. People then lack self-esteem which can often lead to mental illnesses such as an eating disorder. In surveys of over five hundred thousand American adolescents, Psychologist Jean Twenge found that adolescents, Who spent more time on screen activities (smartphones, Internet, And social media) were significantly more likely to have symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation than those who spent their time on non-screen activities.

Although society may trigger mental illness", Whether society was the reason or not the mental illness will eventually come out it just depends on what triggers the mental illness.
Mental illness has always existed, A long time ago there has always been a part of society that is mentally ill. Even though society has changed, Adapted, Evolved etc it does not mean that society CREATED the idea and existence of mental illness.

Yes, I understand that mental illness has always existed as they may be heredity. However, Only a small proportion of mental illnesses are caused from genetics. In fact, According to Don Mordecai, The national leader for mental health and wellness at Kaiser Permanente, "What [he] can definitely see is that there is a genetic predisposition. Genetics can increase your risk, But it"s not a guarantee, " Additionally, Many other scientists haven"t yet found the specific genes that can be linked to mental illness. Many scientists say that social and environmental factors play a significant role in the development of mental health conditions rather than genetics.

Several mental illnesses can be seen biologically or chemically to exist. Clinical depression is something that is actually caused by some sort of mess-up in the brain. You can't say that society created this when there is evidence that there is something actually WRONG inside the brain.
Autism, ADD, ADHD etc are illness" people are either born with or develop overtime how can someone create this. /
Society has evolved and their are new ways of bullying like cyberbullying etc but their are also
Most studies examining social media and mental health aren"t able to determine whether spending more time on social media leads to depression or anxiety, Or if depressed or anxious young people spend more time on social media.
