If by "getting above gravity" you mean escaping earth's gravitational pull then no. You can not "get above gravity" as balloons would not work in space. And in order to escape earth gravitational pull, you would have to travel a lot more further than where the atmosphere stops.

I have heard this a couple times. Thought I would post it on a whim Just to see the response.
Something like if you get in a balloon and you double the distance gravity decreases by two and if you double that distance and gravity decreases to zero at some point.
Makes sense in a way doesn"t it.

This is actually pretty funny. A balloon can't even carry a 1 year old. How the heck do you think they can get above gravity. :)
