Virtual Reality games are more immersive than handheld games, so they can be more fun. It makes it easier for gamers to imagine being in the game because they can see the scale of the game (size-wise) and more of the details.

VR games rarely have a good user interface, and the movement controls aren't very good. So hand-held games win.
