Both of these players are amazing this season. No one can argue with that. The thing is when it comes down to MVP it has to be Russell Westbrook. Obviously it is Westbrook because look at him right now he is averaging 31.9 points a game along with 10.4 assists and 10.7 rebounds a game. He is carrying this team right now. If the Oklahoma City Thunder didn't have Westbrook they wouldn't be in the spot they are in right now. He is the only reason they have a chance at the playoffs. This dude is amazing.

James Harden should win the Most Valuable Player Award over Russell Westbrook.

Allow me to break down the statistics:
First off, Russell Westbrook averaged 24 Field Goal attempts per game this year, and made on average 10.2 of those 24 attempts. That averages out to 42.5% from the floor, which we would be the lowest field goal percentage of an MVP since Allen Iverson won it in 2001. In stark contrast, James Harden shot a better percentage on less attempts, with only 18.9 attempts per game. Additionally, Harden achieved a higher field goal percentage and three point percentage, despite taking on average 2.1 more attempts from beyond the arc than Westbrook. Also note that Harden averaged 11.2 assists to Westbrook's 10.4, which would also account for the 1.5 point differential between the two this year, as Harden set up teammates instead of scoring more often than Westbrook.

Breaking down the stats the way I just did shows that while Westbrook averaged a triple double, he sacrificed numerous statistical achievements to get there.

One of the best statistics to use to show Harden's MVP bid as greater than Westbrook's is his efficiency percentage as compared to Russell's. Harden sits at 52.5%, while Russell is casually averaging just 47.6%. Harden has proven to be a more efficient shooter AND passer than Westbrook.

Of course, there's more to basketball than just stats. The Rockets have rolled to the third seed, while the Thunder struggled to reach the sixth seed. Both Harden and Westbrook have weak supporting casts, but it i safe to assume the Rockets made the greatest improvement since last year.

These points prove that Harden is a better candidate for MVP this year than Russell Westbrook.
