If drop an ant off a building it will not die because it will not fall fast enogh for it to be fatal.

Ha, i accept your challenge. I say it'll die maybe not instantly, but slow and painfully. It'll drag it's broken legs screeming for help and because none of its compadres will hear it, it'll die of agony and lose its will to live screeming, "Porque Dios, Porque!!!" Poor littl;e bugga, wait, what are we debating on? oh yeah. It will die maybe soon after. Even though it has an exoskeletal system, it won't matter at ten stories. Ten stories is high for us, so ten stories to an ant is like 10000 stories for us.

Actually you know what I actually agree with you I think what may happen because of the exoskeleton is that his outside would be ok but his insides would not hold up to the impact so maybe the ant would die..

Ok, i see your argue meant, it probably would live mainly because of it's light body. As it were falling, it would be carried off by the wind and would be placed lightly on the ground with out a scratch and go about it's buisiness. Or its compadres would have its back till the death and carry it out to thier medical facilities where it'll be under critical condition and come out paralized from the abdomin down, but it'll live.

No one. But the chances of that actually happening are incredibly low.

Even if you drop it directly over the anthill, you still have to account for wind.

who is to say the building isn't located directly over the ant colony, and the fall lands it right back on its own anthill?

Well, the world is a big place, even moreso for something as miniscule as an ant. So, if your building is very high, and the ant gets caught by the wind or some other such thing, the likelihood of it landing close enough to find a pheremone trail belonging to its colony is still very low.

Ouch. I just realized how sad it is that I'm having a conversation about what would happen to an ant if you dropped it off a building.

Well, the fall is what got it so far away from its colony. So it would starve as a result of the fall. :D

Actually, your ant is probably going to die no matter where it lands. Although Rob is right about its terminal velocity, you have to remember that ants can't live without their colonies essentially telling them what to do. Therefore, unless it lands somewhere near its colony, or with its colony's pheromone trails close enough for it to follow them home, it will wander around and probably eventually starve to death.

Ok good point, this is why i say that my opponent wins. But if the ant was swept by a breeze and carried safely to an enemy ant colony, then he would have died do to the drop. the drop didn't actually kill him, but because he fell with some unfortunate luck on his side, he died.

ok I don't know exactly how serious you two are about this debate, but there is a technical answer to it. An ant reaches terminal velocity very quickly; in other words, it won't speed up in air very much before the air drag stops it from accelerating. A human reaches terminal velocity at 120 mph, enough to flatten you like a pancake. An ant's terminal velocity is very low; it doesn't matter if you drop it from an airplane at 30,000 feet, it is never going to accelerate to the ground fast enough to cause it any harm whatsoever. It will just blow around in the breeze until it hits the ground safely.
