Pro

it should be a must for every citizen to wear a seatbelt
Mingodalia

Con

I accept the debate. Good luck.
Debate Round No. 1

Pro

Passengers in a vehicle who are not wearing a seat belt can become projectiles during an accident. Unbuckled passengers can very easily be ejected through the front, rear or side windows, resulting in death.Passengers in the rear seat of an automobile who use both lap and should safety belts are 44% more likely to survive in crash. The percentage increases to 73% for rear seat passengers in Vans or SUV vehicles.
Mingodalia

Con

Thousands of people have died because they were trapped by a seatbelt, from being burned alive in the car, to drowning in the car, to being hit by trains. In some cases babies and young ones died as well because Mom or Dad couldn't get loose to save either of them.

Debate Round No. 2
snaymansukh2004

Pro

As mentioned, seat belts promote safety. More specifically, seat belts can aid in the following:

Preventing you from hitting the windshield
Preventing you from being thrown from the vehicle
Preventing you from banging around the vehicle and hitting the steering wheel, door, etc.
Women who are pregnant are more protected when they're wearing a seat belt
Mingodalia

Con

Seatbelts have been known to do a lot of things like rip people in half, kill fetuses, trap people in burning vehicles, trap people stuck on train tracks, and trap people in submerged vehicles to then drown. The seatbelts on planes are pointless.

3 points to Pro (Arguments). Reasons for voting decision: Pro initially cites statistics but does not give citation for them, though his logic regarding passengers no becoming projectiles is sound. Con makes the statement that "Thousands" have been injured by seatbelts. She does give a citation, but it only lists aroind 40 instances, and many of those are highly questionable- e.g cites passengers trapped upside down in vehicles, without considering how much worse it would be if they were in a roll type accident unrestrained. In the third round, pro again makes valid, logical points, but again a citation would have been helpful, as would some form of refutation of cons points. Con then makes a series of assertions, again without citation, and ends with an obviously ridiculous point saying "seatbelts on planes are useless"- clearly having never heard of runway excursions, gear collapses or turbulence. Neither was very convincing, narrow win to pro because he did make a few logical points and Con made at least one incredibly illogical

[*Reason non-removal*] The voter clearly assesses points made by both sides to come to his decision. This is sufficient basis to award argument points.

5 points to Pro (Arguments, Sources). Reasons for voting decision: Statistics lead me to the pro side, also you were both really short.

[*Reason for removal*] This is not sufficient explanation for either of the points awarded. The voter has to assess the sources and arguments if he plans to award these points. Generalizing about the effectiveness of "statistics" is not sufficient.

I judge your debates fairly. You are not a good debater.

Anyone notice that wizofoz purposefully picks out my debates and always votes against me? More proof that he's a childish dick.

Pro didn't do a great job here, Mingo- would you like to re-debate the point?

FungoMinger said-

"The seatbelts on planes are pointless."

This would qualify as the dumbest comment in history, and it is amazing anyone could be this dumb and still breath unassisted.

I've been a professional pilot for over 30 years.

OF COURSE a seat bely is not going to save you in a smoking-hole in the ground type air accident, any more than a car seat belt will save you if you drive into the grand canyon.

BUT- the majority of accidents are more minor, involving things like runway departures and landing gear failures. In these instances a seat belt plus the brace position has been shown to save lives.

Even in serious accidents like the recent crashes of 777s in San Francisco and Dubai, ALL the passengers lived while most would have dies without seatbelts.

Then add the fact that in serious turbulence, those injured are almost always passengers and crew who were not belted in.

Mingo-Fungus says some seriously stupid things, but this is comedy gold.

Drowning seems like an unlikely scenario (especially since I haven't been near water in a car). Though I feel the examples of seatbelts making things worse is few compared to several other times where having no seatbelt was fatal. Just my stance, though.
