I feel that marching band is a sport because you practice, Compete, Win awards, Trophies, Ect. Just like football or basketball
Just because you "practice, Compete, Win awards, Trophies, Ect. " (to quote Pro exactly, Including his spelling error) for something, It is not inherently a sport. Stamp collecting is not considered a sport, But there are contests for stamp collecting in which you can win awards and trophies, And before which you must prepare, Which is essentially what practicing does in any other sport such as football or basketball. It's still not a sport, Though. Therefore we can not use those standards as tests to consider activities as sports. A relevant Merriam-Webster definition of "sport" is as follows: : a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other (https://www. Merriam-webster. Com/dictionary/sport) Football is considered a sport because it is a contest in which people do certain physical activities in accordance of a set of rules and compete against other people. Apologies to basically re-quoting the dictionary definition, But I am providing foundation. Football is there specifically for competing against other people - two teams, Each trying to earn the most points. You can't have football without this core of two teams competing for the highest score. Yes, You can have practice without having two teams competing, But that's not football, That's practice. You're not following the same basic rules of football, Which requires two teams. Same for other games commonly considered sports. I hope you can see where I'm going with this. You don't need a competition or two teams in order to participate in marching band. Marching band, In itself, Is not a game or contest. You CAN participate in contests, But it's not NECESSARY. You don't need to compete against other teams. It's not required to be a marching band, And quite a few don't even participate in competitions. In a nutshell, Football and other games considered sports ARE competitions, And marching band and activities such as stamp collecting CAN be a competition. This is the core difference between sports and marching band, And why marching band is not a sport. |
