Yes it's becoming less popular, with DDO here are the issues with debates

a/ you start a debate, the other person accepts and then quits after one round

b/ You present valid points, links, take the time, to formulate your debate and the opponent forfeits on round 3

c/ you both have great debate points, seems like the debate is going back and forth and then in the end nobody votes and it becomes a tie, a waste of time

You put in all this effort and in the end you don't get anyone voting or the other person quits, so people stop bothering with it

I tried to sign up to vote, and it said it was going to send a verification code to my phone. The code never comes.

That's exactly what happened to me, so there are flaws in DDO, and this is why most people don't vote, so what is the point in debating when in the end you have no winner

Yes, because the voting rules are to restrictive and cumbersome. They are devoid of reality in the real world.
Beware of the people who are in your circle but are not in your corner.

And with the stroke of a pen people 18 to 21 who own a gun became criminals and public enemy #1 having committed no crime and having said nothing. Just like the Jews in Germany during WW2. Must be a weird feeling.

When I hear people crying and whining about their first world problems I think about the universe with everything in it and people in wheelchairs and all of their problems go away.

This particular site is dying, so it is only natural that debating should feature less. The problem isn't lack of "popularity", but lack of functionality.

Yes, because truth is no longer valued as the highest standard. Generational shift.

Those are certainly some of the enablers of the above.
