Like other organizations, health care workplaces have their own conflicts. The occurrence of conflicts is an inevitable part of professional working environments. Therefore, there is the need to leverage conflict resolution strategies in the healthcare workplace. It is the only way for healthcare professionals to manage through difficult situations. Conflict resolution plays a significant role in improving nurse-patients relationships. On the other hand, conflicts in health care environments have different causes. These include limited time and resources caused by shortage of staffs, which leads to longer working shifts. Secondly, personal differences on goals and work styles can lead to unexpected outcomes. Furthermore, although diversity increases in the delivery of health care, if not managed properly, it can become challenging to facilitate effective communication. In addition, regardless of the causes, conflicts affect the productivity of health care professionals. For instance, interpersonal conflicts create a barrier in working towards a common goal. A significant amount of resources within the health care environments is also deployed in conflict resolutions. In efforts to leverage conflict resolution strategies in the health care setting, I conducted a personal interview with a retired nurse named Stacy, who had worked at St. Mary"s Mission Hospital for thirty-three years. According to her responses, she believes that simple skills are critical in resolving conflicts. She strongly advocates for enhancing effective communication and collaboration. It should be emphasized that lack of collaboration is an obstacle for healthcare professionals to be engaged in conflict resolution processes. On the other hand, lack of effective communication creates distrust and dishonesty that hinders positive communication that will improve favorable outcomes for both the caregivers and the patients.
In her experience, Stacy is concerned that poor communication leads to other problems such as demoralization and high rate of staff turnover. Secondly, repetitive communication difficulties are closely associated with the occurrence of numerous medical mishaps. For example, a faulty communication process leads to poor transmission of information, which leads to adverse outcomes such as poor diagnosis and prescriptions. On the contrary, effective communication promotes the formation of a teamwork, which is a crucial strategy in conflict resolution. In this case, the health care professionals will be playing their roles as good team players, making it even easier to solve conflicts.
On the other hand, leveraging conflict resolution strategies in the healthcare workplace requires the leaders to conduct an assessment on the manner that the organization deals with conflicts. For instance, some organizations deal with conflicts through avoidance, power plays, and lack of collaboration between the conflicting parties. As a result, it will become easier for the management to determine the most appropriate methods for conflict resolution. For example, some conflicts arise in the healthcare environment because of the increasing diversity. In this case, the golden rule is to develop and maintain an organizational culture that will consider the needs of members involved in the delivery of health care services. Consequently, the potential of these members to pooling their knowledge together will improve, leading to the formation of cohesive teams. Therefore, it will become relatively easy to respond to stressful situations and challenges.
On a further note, training and coaching are important tools in leveraging conflict resolution in health care settings. They play a significant role in preventing and managing conflicts. Therefore, the management must allocate resources to support training in conflict resolution skills. In addition, training and coaching provide the opportunity for individual members to renew their skills required for solving conflicts. On the other hand, training also involves selecting talented members who can facilitate additional training. These members help in managing internal conflicts through coaching and mediations. In most cases, because these members are familiar with the challenges affecting different individuals, it becomes easier to bring the conflicting parties together to discuss the situation. Notably, training also involves looking for external services that will help in assessing and managing conflicts that cannot be resolved internally. In practice, external trainers and mediators can play a significant role in identifying the situation that triggers conflicts within the health care organizations. They also provide the expertise required for settling disputes that hinder the productivity of health care professionals.
The role of effective communication in leveraging conflicts resolution in health care workplaces seems to be taking the center stage. On the one hand, lack of effective communication creates hostility and misunderstanding, and those are major ingredient for conflicts. At the same time, open communication creates room for preventing, managing, and resolving stress. It should be stressed that conflicts at the heathcare workplace are inevitable because of its dynamic nature. However, while it appears that open communication is an essential tool in solving conflicts, some professionals take it for granted. Fundamentally, good communicators have excellent skills that allow them to listen attentively without judgment. They also have the capability to devise solutions that are required in guiding the teams to maintain their focus even in challenging environments. On the contrary, ineffective communicators are poor listeners who do not assess the conflicts comprehensively before developing solutions. As result, they will develop solutions that will produce short-term results. As such, this means that in efforts to leverage conflicts in a productive manner, it is crucial to develop good communication styles. These styles include becoming a good listener and using body language in an appropriate manner.
On the other hand, unresolved conflicts can impede the health care professionals from attaining their professional goals. For instance, conflicts among the nursing staff can lead to demonstration of aggressive behavior towards the patients. Thus, it means that conflicts jeopardize the quality of services delivered to the patients. Consequently, it is important to leverage conflict resolution strategies at health care working environment. It is important for nurses and physicians to promote a respectful working relationship. This involves reflecting on personal attitudes and values that compromise the establishment of a positive relationship. As a result, it will be fruitful in identifying personal attributes that require improvement. The management should create awareness on the need to anticipate and manage conflicts.
In addition, nurses and physicians face conflicts when delivering services to their clients. These conflicts occurs in cases such as when dealing with a client with violent behavior, psychiatric conditions, and alcohol and drug dependency. Second, a conflict can occur when the nurse or the physician uses a threatening voice and body language failing to listen and respect the rights of the client. Moreover, a health care professional who does not listen to the concerns of the patients" family is likely to create a conflict. In these cases, the management should develop strategies that will minimize the occurrence of behaviors that can trigger a conflict.
