Posts: 201 Add as FriendChallenge to a DebateSend a Message 5/24/2016 1:28:58 AMPosted: 3 years agoSo the light travels in a straight line and does not reflect off of anything? That's easy.Forty-eight in a sphere. The stars of the first three layers are equally sized, but for now assume that they are all like 2 feet wide. The first layer of four is arrayed in a spherical checkerboard, and the second fills up the "holes". The third layer plugs up the small holes between the spheres from a small distance so nothing gets past it, assuming sixteen holes in the semi-cube this has made.Making a sphere out of that formation with a diameter through the outermost stars gives us the size of the stars we will be using for the last four layers (which would take our diameter of 2 and multiply it by 5), which are a repeat of the first three, with as much distance as necessary for it not to clip Layer 3 between them.Gimme cake now.=Chief Defenestrator= Hey, want to play a fun video game? There are still "holes" that can be found when looking via perspectives that do not align precisely with the 3 major axes. And interestingly enough, I didn't come up with this one. I read about it years ago and I can't for the life of me remember where. I've also tried googling it, as the explanation is more technical and insightful than I could reproduce, but I haven't found it. Apparently if you include "dark star" anywhere in a google search you are immediately taken to weird sides of the space-related conspiracy internet.

However, you're equally as correct with regard to the fact that it would take an infinite number of stars to achieve the "blocking of all light".Like I was saying to DoC, I don't remember the source that had the brilliant mathematical proof. But it went something like this:Picture your white star in the center of a large, transparent sphere. The boundaries of this "sphere" are considered your reference point. Whenever you can make it so that no light touches any point on this boundary sphere, you've achieved your goal. Now picture that you've introduced a larger dark star into the equation. If you picture the light hitting the boundary sphere, there will be a fairly large "chunk" of darkness, which will look like a circle. As you increase the size of the dark star, this "dark circle" begins to occlude more and more of the boundary sphere.Through imagination alone, one can see that this "dark circle" approaches, but never quite equals exactly half of the surface area of the sphere. By placing one such dark star on either side of the white star, you can occlude *almost* all of the boundary sphere. This occlusion approaches, but never quite reaches, 100% occlusion. So, two really large dark stars aren't quite enough.Next, we must realize that the distance the dark star from the white star matters in occlusion size. Ie, a very large dark star 1 meter from the white star will produce a larger occlusion shadow then the same sized dark star 1000 meters away from the white star.Putting the two together, we can now try and fill in the "holes" left by the two large, mostly occluding dark stars. Because these stars are so large, one must place the "gap filling" stars a great distance away from the white star itself, such that they do not clip through the main black stars. It is the case that you can never truly "fill in the gaps", as the increased distance you are forced to put in the gap fillers will make their resulting occlusion shadows ever too small to truly occlude the entire boundary sphere. That's more or less the solution, anyway.
