The formation of Beryl marked only the third time on record that two tropical cyclones developed before the official start of hurricane season in the Atlantic. Also the second tropical cyclone of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Beryl developed from a low pressure system near the East Coast of the United States on May 26. Initially subtropical, the storm slowly acquired tropical characteristics as it tracked into warmer sea surface temperatures and decreasing wind shear. By late on May 27, Beryl transitioned into a tropical cyclone while less than 120 miles (190 km) from North Florida and Southeast Georgia."
