In general they're one of the best among all other types of curtains for creating more privacy in your house. But if you're looking exactly for soundproof feature, than it's not the best choice for you. Yeah, because of their thickeness they can be used as a sound barrier but in this case it's better to get special soundproofing curtains which are made specifically to reduce the amount of noise coming into your home by using a thicker material than blackout curtains :)
Comparing with them blackout ones are the best for blocking light from entering your room . They have a very high room-darkening quality both for sunlight and streetlight, because of this feature they became so popular in case of better, more relaxed sleeping both for adults and babies. They're also energy efficient which helps you to save money for your energy bills in summer and winter.
The only main minus for blackout curtains is a great limit for style, unfortunately they usually aren't a good choice for decorating your room.
