The level of division we face now is not without historical precedent. The sum of conflicts we face now are debated with commensurate levels of acrimony as was the so-called fight over slavery. Our partisans now, are what they were in the 1850s and 1860s; as well as 1950s and 1960s.

I've said before and will say again that Antebellum American History, and Civil War history is my least favorite point in time in American History more generally. No time other than that causes me more disgust. It's not only that the arguments in support of slavery were objectively idiotic, palpably dishonest, and morally bankrupt; it was that hundreds of thousands fought and died in defense of an institution whose very existence remains one of the gravest historical sins that we or any nation has ever committed. But, I had no choice as to whether I wanted to learn about it in high school and college. It was required curriculum, for required classes.

Then as now, the "arguments" in support of what is happening in this country parallel the same as those made in support of slavery. Then, Southern religious leaders preached that slavery and racially oriented hierarchy was not only supported by Christianity, but required. Now, Jeff Sessions cited the Bible in support of his unconscionable program to "separate" immigrant children from their parents, prosecute the parents -- even those who legally sought asylum -- and detain indefinitely the children in an archipelago of penal-colony like "facilities" that bear closer resemblance to Soviet gulags than anything that has ever existed in this country. Then, Douglass argued that state's rights were the prevailing issue, and insofar as that was the case, each state had the sole and exclusive right to decide for itself whether or not to maintain slavery as an institution. That was a lie. Not a mere act of political manipulation. It was a lie. Now, the Trump administration argues that everything wrong in this country is because of "Democrats" despite the fact that Republicans control all three branches of government. That is a lie. Not a mere act of political manipulation. It is a flatly dishonest lie.

Then and now, masses of low-socioeconomic status whites were and are corralled into supporting the economic interests of the monied elite by inducing them to believe that their status and worth were connected to the elite's political successes. Then, those people were told that despite the fact that their lives were materially congruent in status with black slaves, or worse (slaves at least sometimes had food), the mere fact that they were white placed them over and above the "niggers" or "slaves" who toiled in the fields. Now, those same people are told by Republicans that despite the fact that they are being raped by an opioid epidemic, imprisoned en masse by for-profit prisons who donate to the Republican party, and their jobs have been decimated by Republican tax policies and Republican-led economic developments; while whatever remained of the social safety net installed by FDR and LBJ is being ripped out from under them on the federal and state level, they are at least better than "immigrants" whose lives are worth less than animals to the Republican party. They were, are, and shall forever remain the useful idiots of whatever aristocracy exists at the time.

The same people, have been manipulated by the same groups, for the same reasons, to the same ends, with the same results, across generations. When the slightest hope that a center-right Democrat (Obama) might make something vaguely resembling a "change" is on the horizon, as it was in 2008 and 2012, this country returns to what it has always been, and shall ostensibly forever remain for so long as these people continue to occupy the same social position as they did before the Civil War was fought.

There is no solution, save for the demographic problem that birthed the reincarnated backlash of working class and evangelical whites to solve itself, as it will. The way slavery ceased to be something that was supported by a majority of America was by the death of those who supported it. The way Jim Crow ceased to be something that was supported by a majority of America was the death of those who implemented and maintained it. So shall the death of the Republican party be caused by the demographic redistribution of working class and evangelical whites.

Make no mistake, though: I do not say this longing for that state of affairs to come to pass. But, the values reflected by contemporary Republican policies are not values that will endure over time. Rather, they are values that will die with the last generation that held them, as our culture endures this contemporary bath of fire. It is for this reason that there is truth to the notion that the moral arc of history is long. It is not short, and it's not linear; but it most certainly bends towards justice, even if what is visible now with each passing day resembles the hallmarks of Antebellum America, and the totalitarian dictatorships of the not-too-distant past.

I think the question we all have to ask ourselves, if we're thinking people, is whether the position we take now will subject ourselves to justifiable historical condemnation.

Those who stood in defense of slavery believed in it. It wasn't just that they thought it was an economically useful scheme -- though they believed that too. Rather, it was that they understood it to be their society's foundation. In this way, they could not conceive of a world beyond the one they knew. And insofar as they could not conceive of a world beyond the one they knew, they were clearly not "thinking" people -- because others certainly did in the United States and abroad. If those others -- whomever they were -- could think of a world without slavery, then it was incumbent upon those who engaged in the practice of it to realize the nature of their transgressions.

That is not to say that I'm in favor of the pseudointellectual witchcraft of holding historical figures to the same standards as we hold ourselves today, however. It is rather to suggest that if others who were their contemporaries knew better, than they ought to have as well and for their failures of that sort, they are properly condemned.

Just as slavery was a moral issue, before it was any other kind of issue -- as Lincoln correctly understood -- so too are the issues we face now. It is not simply that we are trading political horses when we're talking about creating internment camps for immigrant children, although that seems to be what Jeff Sessions believes while he cites "the Bible" in support of "the rule of law".

There is no law in this country that has existed since World War II which even authorized, much less required crying children to be ripped from their parents arms as they are carted into any one of the penal islands in the archipelago of what stands as one of the most nauseating moral crises the Trump administration has ushered in so far. To the extent Sessions claims otherwise, he is not only wrong, he is lying.

This is such dishonest outrage.

Today, millions of AMERICANS are in prison...ripped away from their kids. How many tears?

How about the thousands of CPS workers ripping kids away from bad parents daily?
Where are the tears?

Every Illegal alien jumping the line at the border is an irresponsible criminal parent. Save your tears.
The extinction of the species is worse than the extinction of the nation, which is worse than the extinction of the tribe, which is worse than the extinction of the family, which is worse than the extinction of the individual. The second he reverses that list of priorities, he becomes a coward, and would be summarily disposed of by any civilized society that values its own survival.

Save your crocodile tears. Virtually every criminal law on the books has, or has the potential of causing " crying children to be ripped from their parents arms as they are carted into any one of the penal islands". That is precisely what happens to families with parents who break the law. So just like most leftist hacks, your rant is full of half truths, misrepresentations and outright deceit. Like this attempt by the leftists to mislead the public https://www.snopes.com... and this one http://www.businessinsider.com... "Useful idiots" yeah, good one coming from you, tool.

You are doing a really bad job trying to convince people that illegal aliens are innocent parents and that the government is the bad guy for enforcing bad laws on the books.

Make a post about how we should morally have open borders. This should be interesting.

It is rather amusing that you would think that you would be able to recognize when someone's running circle's around you ;)

The points I've made remain. You haven't made a point, though you've tried. I suggest trying to keep your eye on the ball, next time.

Maybe in my next thread, though, I'll just make it a T-Ball level.

You know this is idiotic. You know what I was talking about. You know that what you brought up is a totally different thing. You also know that what I said about what I was talking about has nothing to do with what you brought up, and yet here you are, doing this nonsense. Weak.

You are doing a really bad job trying to convince people that illegal aliens are innocent parents

That was not the point, nor an implication of anything I said. Try again.

and that the government is the bad guy for enforcing bad laws on the books.

That is also not what I said, nor an implication of what I said.

Make a post about how we should morally have open borders. This should be interesting.

That is not a point I would support or agree with, nor is it what I said here, nor is it an implication of what I said.

Do you understand that entering a country as an asylum seeker is NOT illegal?
