I think its a great idea though, immigration should be a furtherance of the national interest, not a humanitarian project.

Of course should give preference to skills which are in need, but we do need low skill. Who is going to pick the tomatoes? Also why would you not prefer to help people laid off get retrained for higher skill rather than finding an immigrant to do it?

You need to learn how to buy a 2 dolla tomato without relying on illegal slave labor.
The extinction of the species is worse than the extinction of the nation, which is worse than the extinction of the tribe, which is worse than the extinction of the family, which is worse than the extinction of the individual. The second he reverses that list of priorities, he becomes a coward, and would be summarily disposed of by any civilized society that values its own survival.

Why you have a problem with legal market wages? There is nothing stopping implimenting an effective low skill visa program to fill agriculture needs other than short sightedness.

For f's sake depleting low skill labor is the same thing as min wage hike. Same economic fundamentals.

One is achieved by artificial floor on labor costs and the other by attacking supply of the labor pool. Both reduce the number of low wage jobs due to labor inflation. Of course I don't expect birds to understand.

Also I buy heirloom tomatoes so I already pay over $2 per tomato.

I want you say without laughing that illegal immigrants earn the federal minimum wage.

Actually I am wrong. You will actually pay 1.18 for a tomato, not 2 dolla.

In all seriousness though, I agree. But deregulating the H-2A and a merit based immigration system aren't mutually exclusive.

Agreed, but I have never heard Trump speak to H-2A and could reasonably assume H-2A worker fall into the population of immigrants who do not have the skill to take care of one's self.

Ironically the fiscal conservative may flip the script and argue the current market wage is too low due to illegals and using immigration can be a market driver to increase wage thus less gov dependencies just like the left may argue min wage increase also gives motivation to work versus gov dependency.
