To widdle down the discussion in my thread "Soma" to just one aspect of it, I'm posing this, slightly different, question. Some of you have probably heard it already. I like to think about it.

There is a machine that you can get inside which satisfies all your bodily cravings- I mean all of them. But not just that- it creates, from accessing your very own mind, a virtual world of pure, seamless perfection to you. It allows you to lead, in all ways, the life you wish you could have in a world that you wish existed.

There are two main conditions:
1. Once you go in, you can never, ever come back out again.
2. Once you go in, you will not remember the life you had before.

Would you go into the machine? Why?

Wait, is the machine all-knowing? If so, can it incorporate things into the world that I don't know about?

It knows everything about you- even things you didn't know you'd like. The virtual world would be everything that you love- even if you can't imagine it right now. There is no doubt that it would be the height of perfection in your mind.

Well, truth basically is perfection so if the machine can give me truth then of course I'll take it.

Given how the situation you described there would be such a strong temptation to go in to the dream world. It would honestly only be my family that held me back.

ohhhh conspiracy keanu moment.

If you desire truth, it might show you an identical world to the real world and delude you still into thinking it was real. But then what would be the point?

This brings up a very interesting question - would this "virtual" world not be objective?

It depends on whether I would know that none of the people inside it were real; if I would not know that, I would seriously consider it.

But there is no way the machine could give me full happiness except by changing the me that wants it. By forgetting who I was before I go in there, I'm almost a "new person"; the person who went in there would miss the "real" versions of his wife and...other people I assume, but the machine would take that away. It's a form of death for the me that's going in, and thus, while I might seriously consider it, I'd likely reject it, because I'm the me going in there.

Now, if there were a way to be hooked up to the machine with the people I love, even if I no longer knew that (and assumed ALL the people were real), then I would likely totally do that; the me of now would not know that the the people I love are actually going to be elsewhere, and thus the me that I am now would have no problem with it.

Aaaaand this is where human bias comes into play. Truth is truth regardless of what we think. If the machine lies to me then how could you trust it to do anything?
