The record for a filibuster is something like 24-25 hours, for the civil rights act. Wonder if he can hold out long enough...

i'm just reading this thread, but I'm pretty sure Strom Thurmond holds the record and it was like more than a Day.. I could have made that up but it sounds right

You'd have to really prepare to not need to use the restroom for an entire 24 hours

Rand now holds the record for longest non-stop talking and doubled the old record.

Rand is creeping up on the record for longest filibuster in general.

Cool. I'm sure he has the right mindset to do it, not sure about his endurance.

pretty exciting , I fully support what Paul is doing.

If he manages to take the longest fillibuster record, all he'll have left to do is father illigetimate black children and keep them secret for about 60 years while he stays alive until 110 years old. :)

food isn't the issue. Also, if he wanted to he could just wear an adult diaper.

Water is the issue. If you're going to talk for 12 hours straight you need water, and if you keep drinking you're going to have to take a leak

After nearly 13 hours of talking, Sen. Rand Paul's filibuster is one for the history books.

The Kentucky Republican comes in at No. 9 on a draft list of longest Senate speeches kept by the historian's office, clocking in at 12 hours and 52 minutes.

Paul's talk-fest delayed a final vote on the confirmation of John Brennan as CIA director and highlighted the senator's concerns about the Obama administration's policy on drones.

Paul fell more than 11 hours short of the record set by Republican Sen. Strom Thurmond, who protested the 1957 Civil Rights Act for 24 hours and 18 minutes. Paul joked he wanted to try and eclipse Thurmond, but he needed a bathroom break.

i'd take a s hit on the senate floor, that's got to be an even more elite fraternity of people than those that have succesfully fillibustered. I wonder if you get a secret handshake or something

Which president was responsible with our finances? Washington? Jefferson? Those cult statues, secret tunnels and chambers, and palaces must have been a product for very responsible spending.

1) His speech won the respect of people throughout the political spectrum, throughout the world. It turns out that standing up to government-run murder of citizens is generally well-received.

2) McCain has a track-record of supporting 1984-esque policies, so this isn't out of line with his character, or lack thereof.

He wasnt prepared. The vote wasnt supposed to be until today apparently, and it got pushed ahead of shedule. So he had to start the filibuster unprepared, and as i believe he said himself, had the wrong shoes on. May seem small, but you try standing in an uncomfortable pair of shoes for 13 hours haha

He wasnt prepared. The vote wasnt supposed to be until today apparently, and it got pushed ahead of shedule. So he had to start the filibuster unprepared, and as i believe he said himself, had the wrong shoes on. May seem small, but you try standing in an uncomfortable pair of shoes for 13 hours haha

that's impressive. How do you talk for 13 hours straight just thinking of stuff off the top of your head? And he was articulate the entire time and kept onto the topic of drone strikes as well.

Paul said going to the floor he didn't plan on filibustering.

Well...didn't exactly follow up on the promise, did he?

What?

He sorta filibustered.

Ya I was saying he didn't plan on doing it coming in, not that he didn't want to.

Ah. All the more kudos to him, since that means he (probably) didn't prepare.

The other senators that helped him out, not so much. Rubio quoted Jay-Z... Jay...Z... *facepalm*

What's remarkable about Rand Paul's filibuster:

- He spoke from his own mind, actually made an argument relevant to the matter at hand, 11 hours long (personally minus help), he did NOT recite a dictionary, recite historical documents, read from books and phonebooks.

- He actually captured the Democrat-controlled Senate floor while it was unguarded. He actually captured a rare opportunity to even begin a filibuster. Usually Democrats guard the floor to block the possibility to filibuster.

- He was slick by allowing Senators to ask questions without yielding floor thus providing small breaks.

- He raised important issues that no one ever talks about and really made Libertarian thought mainstream and heard worldwide.

- Several authoritarians attempted to stop him multiple times. First a government emergency alert interrupted him, then Harry Reid barged in and said this ends now, stop this, Dick Durbin of Illinois tried tricking Rand Paul into giving up the floor and saying to postpone the discussion to a hearing in the future.

Rand Paul rammed through all obstacles.

- Thurmond supposedly bent the rules by leaving the floor. Rand Paul literally did not leave the floor or sit.

Ted Cruz just affirmed that Paul cannot sit or even go to the restroom, makes it that much more impressive.

O.O

DAAAAYYYYUUUUUMMMM.

The record for a filibuster is something like 24-25 hours, for the civil rights act. Wonder if he can hold out long enough...

i'm just reading this thread, but I'm pretty sure Strom Thurmond holds the record and it was like more than a Day.. I could have made that up but it sounds right

Rand now holds the record for longest non-stop talking and doubled the old record.

Rand is creeping up on the record for longest filibuster in general.

http://en.wikipedia.org...

the link you gave me was wikipedia first of all, secondly it confirms what I said.

unless I misread it it has Rand at something like 13 hours and

Thurmond's aforementioned stall holds the record for the longest filibuster in U.S. Senate history at 24 hours, 18 minutes.[1

Mike Gravel filibustered for 5 straight months...I guess none of his filibusters was longer than 16 hours, though.

In 1971, he waged a successful one-man filibuster for five months that forced the Nixon administration to cut a deal, effectively ending the draft in the United States. He is most prominently known for his release of the Pentagon Papers, the secret official study that revealed the lies and manipulations of successive U.S. administrations that misled the country into the Vietnam War. After the New York Times published portions of the leaked study, the Nixon administration moved to block any further publication of information and to punish any newspaper publisher who revealed the contents.

And, of course, he fought one of the most important battles for free speech in the history of free speech...

From the floor of the senate, Gravel (a junior senator at the time) insisted that his constituents had a right to know the truth behind the war and proceeded to read 4,100 pages of the 7,000 page document into the senate record. The Supreme Court ultimately ruled that Senator Gravel did not have the right and responsibility to share official documents with his constituents.

He then published The Senator Gravel Edition, The Pentagon Papers, Beacon Press (1971). This publication resulted in litigation, Gravel v. U.S., resulting in a landmark Supreme Court decision (No. 71-1017-1026) relative to the Speech and Debate Clause (Article 1, Section 6) of the United States Constitution.

Y'all should learn about this stuff instead of just gleaning trivia off Wikipedia...it's important.
