About Me: | Read on, see some of my forum posts, or ask me to find out. |
Activities: | Music (particularly classical, classic rock, and jam bands like Phish), writing, blogging, reading, thinking, philosophizing, observing, socializing, arguing, acting, watching interesting and thought provoking shows and movies, loving, feeling loved. |
Beliefs: | Anarchistic (undecided between ancap, libertarian socialism, and mutualism) atheist, secular humanistic Jew. My philosophy is something of a hodgepodge of absurdism, existential nihilism, Epicureanism, an acceptance of the limitations of human reason, and the imperfections of man when viewed as an only partly rational animal, differing from "lesser" animals only in tool-making and linguistic capabilities. In general I'm very attracted to Ancient Greek philosophies. Thinkers that influence my perception of life - Socrates, Albert Camus, Epicurus, Michel de Montaigne, Thomas Jefferson, Noam Chomsky, Murray Rothbard, Milton Friedman, Hans-Herman Hoppe, Christopher Hitchens, Bertrand Russell, Albert Einstein, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Stefan Molyneux, Freidrich Hayek, Richard Feynman, many more. |
Books: | 1984, The Shining, Animal Farm, Catcher In The Rye, The Book Thief, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Count of Monte Cristo, Harry Potter, Blink, The Tipping Point, God Is Not Great, Breaking The Spell: Religion As A Natural Phenomenon, The Revolution (Ron Paul) (Note: this is an extremely old an outdated list reflecting my more juvenile days but I'm too lazy to do anything about it, so it remains.) |
Movies: | In no particular order : The Shining, Shutter Island, Midnight In Paris, Forrest Gump, Almost Famous, Back To The Future 1 and 2, Life Is Beautiful, Shawshank Redemption, The Birds, The Pianist, Black Swan, A Beautiful Mind, Schindler's List, The Matrix, Indiana Jones, Titanic, Silence Of The Lambs, Austin Powers, Ghost, Hugo, The Godfather, Goodfellas, Horrible Bosses, Inception, Kickass, |
Music: | ac/dc, aerosmith, the beatles, bob marley, billy joel, bruce springsteen, cat stevens, conor oberst, cream, david bowie, dire straits, the doors eagles, elton john, eminem, eric clapton, grateful dead, green day, guns n roses, led zeppelin, meat loaf, mika, moody blues, muse, my chemical romance, neil young, nirvana, ozzy, peter paul and mary, PHISH (!), pink floyd, police, queen, r.e.m., radiohead, the ramones, rolling stones, rush, the shins, simon and garfunkel, tom petty, u2, van halen, the who, wilco.... plus most classical/symphonic stuff (predominantly that stuff these days actually) |
Quotes: | Too many. I am nothing short of a quote junkie. However, here are three of them which I pulled directly from my facebook profile: I think it's really tragic when people get serious about stuff. It's such an absurdity to take anything really seriously ... I make an honest attempt not to take anything seriously: I worked that attitude out about the time I was eighteen, I mean, what does it all mean when you get right down to it, what's the story here? Being alive is so weird." - Frank Zappa "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." -Thomas Jefferson "I am convinced that there are more threats to American liberty within the 10 mile radius of my office on Capitol Hill than there are on the rest of the globe." - Ron Paul |
Sports Teams: | I like the Yankees, I guess, but only because my Dad does. Aside from that, refer to - http://www.sportssuck.org/article6.htm and prepare to laugh your ass off. |
TV Shows: | Scrubs, Bored To Death, 30 Rock, and Adventure Time are my favorite shows of all time; nothing else comes close. South Park, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are all brilliantly satirical and hilarious. Family Guy is wonderfully witty, random, and absurd. The Office, American version. Curb Your Enthusiasm. The History and Science Channels when they actually talk about history and science. And who could deny the awesomeness of those good old fashioned nickelodeon shows from the '90s? Not me. |

The U.S. invasion of Iraq was justified.

This a response to Jat's challenge to a debate: "Anything from American foreign policy to Israeli foreign policy to the Iran situation to the Israeli-Palestine conflict. Your call." I trust that he will keep his word and is willing to debate.I will be arguing that, though mistakes have been made, the US invasion of Iraq was geopolitically and ethically justified. Burden of proof will be shared. Pro has the option of beginning his argument in the first round or allowing me to start in Round...
Herbert Hoover, Forgotten Progressive: the 31st President Was a Big Govt. Market Interventionist

Without a doubt one of the most severe, most widespread, and most persistent myths of all American history is that Herbert Clark Hoover, the 31st President of the United States of America who served from 1929-1933, sent America into the tragic, drawn out economic downturn now known as the Great Depression by reducing government intervention in the economy, adhering to laissez-faire capitalism, and shrinking the size of government in general... Or, as Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer sums up, jus...
The Supposed "Ground Zero Mosque" should be built.

My stance is presented in the title of the debate. I will present my case in several manners: 1) The "Ground Zero Mosque" is, in fact, not actually a Ground Zero Mosque. 2) The builders of the "Mosque" have a constitutional right to do so, and to prevent them from building it would be unconstitutional. They have the law on their side. 3) It is both Un-American and straight out immoral. The moral components: a) The "rubbing salt on the wound" idea is incorrect and foolish. Furthermo...
Jesus is not the Messiah as foretold by the Old Testament.

Jesus Christ is not the Messiah that is spoken of throughout the Old Testament. There are various tasks/qualifications for the "Messiah-ship" laid out in the Old Testament and, from what we know about Jesus and his life, he did not complete them. There is no legitimate reason to believe that Jesus is or ever as the Messiah, but there are many legitimate reasons to believe otherwise. My main arguments will be presented further in the next round....
Verse 34:6 in the book of Exodus accurately describes God.

"And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth..." [1] In this debate, God is defined as - the supernatural being conceived as the perfect and omnipotent and omniscient originator and ruler of the universe; the object of worship in monotheistic religions, [2] except in this debate, God = God of the Old Testament. No Christian theology, for instance, applies. No arguments over semantics. My...
