Yes, government run safe injection sites are contrary to public safety and the law, because the condone drug use. More people will engage in an activity if it is safe. More people will engage in an activity if it is available to them. Having injection sites will only encourage use because people will not understand the risks.
Asking a gambling addict to meet me at the racetrack so I can safely limit his betting is not caring, It is enabling. Giving a junk food addict 1 donut a day as opposed to their self indulgence of 12, Does not eliminate their problem, It extends it. Giving a porn addict the Sears women's underwear catelogue does not help them. A dumbing down of undesireable behavior is the same undesireable behavior. Our focus should not be to appease the human's body unnatural need for opium, But to rid the unnatural need. Anything short of that goal is defined as enabling. Enabling behavior is not loving or caring, But unkind and circular in logic.
Why should we have safe injection zones if drugs are illegal. I don’t in addition to possession, it is also illegal to supply anyone with drugs, to produce drugs or to import or export drugs. It is also illegal to allow premises you own, rent, and use or occupy to be used for any drug-related activity.
Harm reduction is a public health approach to substance use. Supervised injection sites allow those who use injection drugs to inject their drugs in a specific location that is staffed by trained health care and social service professionals. Supervised drug injection sites provide sterile injection equipment, places for needle disposal, allow for information and education to be given to the user by the staff as well as allow quick response of medical staff in the event of a drug overdose. Having a specific location to inject decreases the number of IV drug users that may be injecting on the street and having a place to dispose of needle decreases the amount of needles that may be discarded out in the community which actually increases public safety. People have the right to make their own decisions in terms of choosing to use drugs, the supervised injection site does not provide the substances it decreases the harm associated with the drug use.
Government run safe injection sites are one form of harm reduction for drug users. Harm reduction is a much better policy than prohibition and criminalization because it helps maintain public health and safety. By providing safe injection sites the government can reduce the spread of bloodborne pathogens such as HIV and Hepatitis, which can be spread unknowingly from IV drug users to other users, sexual partners and anyone that comes in contact with contaminated fluids. Harm reduction saves lives, not just of the users but of those around them, and therefore should be encouraged.
