Just like obeying the laws of physics helps a plane fly, obeying the laws of God helps us get farther in our lives. The air resistance is essential to lifting the plane. Gravity then helps the plane control its altitude. Both of these seems counter-intuitive to flight, but they give the plane control to go anywhere.
A simple real-life example: a drunkard who can’t accomplish anything because they are in bondage to their addiction. Religion assists that person to personal freedom, which then gets them to where they truly want to go in life.
Many times people seek after the freedom of ‘sin’ for deeper reasons that they don’t realize they can get a better way. Maybe the drunkard started drinking to fit in with friends as a youth or to escape pain. When you get down to the root of it, he just wanted to feel loved or just wanted to have peace. Religion tries to help us get to the same root desires without being tied down by addiction, bad habit, broken laws, unnecessary debt, other forms of bondage, etc. Law based on truth can provide true freedom.
The world already had its fair share of limitations regarding our freedom. Putting on top of that an extra set of unjustified rules does not help at all. On the other hand, if a God is responsible for outcomes, events, judgements, etc. religious belief might grant a type of sensation of "freedom" that would stem from an exemption of personal responsibility, which does not help us either.
Your free, as long as you obey our rules. A clear contradiction no matter how you look at it. By joining just about any group, you are faced with requirements. Religion is a prime example. Tho you may have a choice to be Christian, the religion also requires you to deny the existence of other gods. Demands you follow the laws of their god and his son. You are not allowed to question the existence of either nor their supernatural actions. Some branches go much farther in suppression of freedom. Just look at groups like the Amish and Muslims. Tell me, do they have more or less freedom than an atheist? Contrary to popular belief, atheism has no dogma or belief structure. If you don't believe in the existence of gods/deities, your an atheist. Your not required to believe in the big bang, evolution or any other scientific theory. Sure, many/most do but it is in no way a requirement.
Due to the fact that that all religions are created to explain the unexplained and then comes the power from which comes fear form most and then oh yeah comes that control. So how is it possible that religion gives you more freedom?
Now with the christian god, the entire text of the bible is based on the superior ego god complex and nothing else. Indeed veryyyy controlling by power and fear of that ego. Freedom? Hardly.
