China "one child" policy: Is the "one child" policy good for the environment?

  • It's good and bad in equal measure.

I believe that the One Child Policy is good because it helps prevent overpopulation which would lead to famines, overcrowding and massive pollution levels. However, it is bad because of the way pregnant women were treated - especially when they were pregnant for the second time. Also, it created a mega generation of elderly people with little to no younger people to look after them. My solution to this dilemma would be to have a Two Child Policy with restrictions on how the pregnant women would be treated so that they have the respect and dignity they deserve.

  • It worked the way it was supposed to

In the 1960's and leading into the 1970's, China was experiencing an extremely large famine, and to combat this, the government implemented a one child policy. It was effective, as it helped the famine end, and boosted the economy. I know that there are rare reports of cruelty to the new-borns, but the fact is that China also has a free and easy abortion system, so has dealt with this problem in the proper manner. In addition, when the one child policy was in place, there were perks to only having one child such a raise in pay, as well as free education and health benefits.

  • Ok let’s talk

Without the one child policy, China will have to much population and the government does not want to deal with that. Some animals will not have homes and children will not get a education maybe. Because they will not have enough room in schools. With less people in China there would be WAY more room for many things without hurting the animal population.

  • Fewer resources are needed if there are fewer people thus meaning less pollution

When we think about what we do chances are that most of the activities we do cause pollution or hurt the environment. When we eat meat and vegetables we had to go and buy it at the supermarket. Before the meat comes to the supermarket it is transported by trucks which in fact causes pollution. Even before that lots of water and crops were used to make the stock or crop grow. Imagine how much air pollution was evaded from the one child policy.

Another thing is that the quality of the child's life will be much better. If you think about it now most families in China will have enough money to give one child a great education and a great childhood as because they will not have to pay for two children's necessities.

  • Why its good for the environment

Well , i think its good for the environment. First, less consumption of resources, less factories being built, more open land, less pollution. If we have less pollution and less factory taken land we will have less pollution which leads to a decrease in climate change. Making climate change not a significant as it is would defiantly improve the environment. Also having one child would cause families to be able and have access to more money for food and sheltering. In conclusion, we believe that having a child is good for the environment.

  • Because It will overpopulate and then no one else could immigrate to china.

I think that most countries should go be this rule, Maybe not like Canada and Russia because they need more people but, small countries with lots of people need more structure and rule to function. With one child, you can focus more on them and make sure that they grow up to be very smart.

  • Pollution in China

China is a vey crowded place. But when it comes to pollution it get serious. China has more than a billion people living there and that means about seven hundred million cars. Thats insane. But it isn't a good thing. The cars produce a gas called carbon monoxide and that can clog the air flowing through you lungs. Soon the carbon monoxide will cloud up their country and have many people dying.

  • This can be good

    -it helps control population
    - If theres to many people not enough jobs
-less strain on resources like food and metals etc..
-if theres too many people meaning some people have to migrate
    • If you only have 1 child you can spend more money and time on the child

  • Hi hi hi

Hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi Yih high high high high I hi Yih hih hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi

  • I just say no

I saw no because its dumb that you can only have one child. You should be able to have more than one child. Its not fair to others because what if they have triplets huh? Are they just supposed to kill the other two? No, that's not how it should work, instead of killing/hurting innocent children maybe they should just send their child to another country and live there until they become an adult and they could move back to their original home.

  • Cruel to babies

A female reported that they drowned a baby in a bucket and that mothers are traumatized and can never have a good night sleep. Also it only applied to 40 and 63%. It is an atrocious decision and is a murderous trait to have no one deserves to die as a baby

  • According to me OCP of China is not good for the environment.

China's OCP is not good because it violated the human rights.Illegal ultrasound was done to pregnent women. As the one child policy suggested people to have only one child, many couples wanted boy.So if their first child was a girl they either kill them or put them in the street or give them to the orphanage. Many pragnent women were also sterilised. They are also foetuse. If a couple is going to have a second the mother was forced to abort the child even in the 8 or 9 months which is very much risky. So according to me that's the reason OCP is not good for environment.

  • By Eric Jacob Pettersson

“The claim by Chinese officials that the one-child policy has helped avert 400 million births.’’
(Document B) This sounds good, right? Well here read the quote again. Claim. The definition of claim is “state or assert that something is the case, typically without providing evidence or proof.” China was in a bad economic position starting in 1949 ending in the 1980s. But a bad economy was and still in so excuse to get almost nothing done, take away people's rights, and cause a gender imbalance.

One of the main issues with the One-Child policy is that it has accomplished almost nothing at the cost of the workforce. “In countries without a forceful and costly policy as China’s, the birth rate has declined with similar trajectories and magnitude .” This means that in countries like Brazil and Thailand the fertility rate has reduced with almost the exact same slope. Furthermore, it has been a detrimental towards the economy. The main example of this is that “In 2007 there were six adults of working age for every retiree, but by 2040 that ratio is expected to drop to 2 to 1.” This caused factories to shut down, and is likely to continue to cause an increase in the percentage of people living below the poverty line. For these reasons, China’s One-Child Policy has had, and is expected to continue to have, a negative effect on China’s workforce.

The One-Child Policy has constituted an extreme human rights violation. “Couples can be fined thousands of dollars for having an [extra] child without a permit.” (doc E) and sometimes are punished with forced abortions, or sterilizations. A quote from chairman Mao “Of all the things in the world people are the most precious” If people are the most precious thing in the world why are we taking away their rights? The measure taken to enforce this policy has at times been physically and emotionally traumatizing, as well as inhaling punishing.

The One-Child Policy has also resulted in a serious and harmful gender imbalance, “With boys being viewed as culturally preferable.” Which has resulted in a larger population of boys than girls, “China still has 32 million more boys than girls under the age of 20.” Another problem with this is that women are expected to have a higher “sex appeal” to get a job because of the higher ratio of men to women. The policies interference with people's ability to form “normal” families is contributing to gender discrimination and life dissatisfaction for all.

  • It just isn't right. There's a lot more other ways to do this.

Financially, it may help, but emotionally it may not. Most people have to kill or let other people take their innocent children away, with parents having no say in this. If people are worried about food, then they should open up more farms for more food since there's probably a lot of industrialism going on. People could also move to other countries instead of staying in China. Besides, just like others said, most kids get a sense of loneliness and they don't have anyone to turn to when they grow up and learn from. For most people it's a yes, and for some people it's a no, sometimes it's both. It's a half and half argument and I can understand both sides, but I'd have to say no for this one.

  • Ageing population China

This means that the majority of the population is above 60. And with the increased demand for a better health care if you don't have enough young people to fill the professions like a doctor and many old people craving assistance from the doctor is causeing more of a problem. Also it led to an imbalance in population with parent deciding that a male heir will earn much more keep their elders alive.

  • Killing people is not right

Its bad to kill people let the people have a life
you got one let people have one to
girls are having to be killed and that is not fair
the governors should a least let the women have two children instead of one
the child will be lonely without brothers and sisters

  • This created more problems that it fixed...

After 35 years in use, this policy showed very little progress. According to The New York Times, this led to a widening imbalance in the number of men and women. There are about 120 boys born in china to every 100 girls. Now, for decades, there cont be as many adults to take care of the elderly. Now, because of this policy, China will have to deal with this for decades.

  • This could have been avoided

China thought that the world would be a less crowded place if they put the "one child" rule into place. However, Korea started at a similar population as China and not they have a similar birth rate then the USA. This is because people started pocasing on there career more instead of having children. Children also started surviving child birth more because of the increase in good health care so people could start having less children because more would survive. People also do not need there children to help them out in there job as as much any more. If they were just to leave china alone the same thing would have happened as a the citizens because more educated and birth control became for of an option. Now China has a lack of females and lots of mad people.

  • Without a steady Replacement Rate, China's Population will decrease rapidly and the Economy will go down with it.

When there are not enough workers in an economy and the country cannot flourish. We can see this happening in Japan where the NIR is decreasing but the NDR is decreasing as well so there is a large older population and not enough young people to support their retirement therefore the government has to increase taxes to support their large senior citizen population.
