Colonization of the Moon: Are there good scientific reasons for colonizing the Moon?

  • Yes we should colonize the moon

Colonizing the moon can have many benefits in favor of the human race. Colonization means that we will move forward to establish bases and further research on the moon, all the while sending humans to inhabit it. Some sources say that the moon will provide research on how we can approach other colonizations that may come in the future, while other say that that we should focus on the present or that we should go straight to mars. This topic is an important one as it may determine the future of the human race. If humans come across a global evacuation event, our research on the moon will help us be able to move and colonize somewhere else. The moon should be colonized to expand the reach of human exploration and inhabitancy and also gain more information for future colonizations with the resources we have now.

If humans colonize the moon, they will be able to increase our presence in the galaxy. Nasa says that if we are able to colonize the moon and create space bases, we can create an emerging space economy. This is one of their long-time goals. In this emerging space economy, Nasa plans to enlist other robotic landers to explore the moon and bring back information. They plan to make these landers deposit payloads on the moon and they might even release a draft by 2019. This is important as it can allow us to have a better understanding of how to proceed with transporting goods into space. “The agency will seek information from industry later this month to determine how to best proceed with potential partnerships. This agency-wide strategy will inspire humankind to make the next bold move towards our lunar neighbor,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate at Nasa Headquarters. While american innovation will lead the way, opportunities for partnerships with the U.S. industry and other countries will be expanded. Working towards a common goal will strengthen relationships between countries and governments. “The Moon, according to NASA scientists, is a great jumping off point for deep space exploration. A colony on the Moon could therefore offer a functional peg for explorations on Mars, which the space agency hopes to be able to do by 2030.” This will further help us in our goal to get closer towards colonizing full size planets in case of a global threat. Darby Dyar, professor of astronomy at Holyoke College says that, “humans will build a permanent moon base in her lifetime.” This means that we will gain more information and use the resources we have at hand now.

  • Space Colonization and Exploration

The exploration and colonization from earth is unreasonable. The moon is the most reasonable place to do it with the technology we have now. With technology of getting off Earth, we use resources that we use that are running out at a faster rate. With the gravitation on the moon being less it would be more cost effective to launch off the moon instead of Earth.
Also the moon has resources we can use to build there and possibly transport back to Earth or use for other space towns or countries. Also with the vacuum of space, exposed metals would be purified and exposing the metals would purify them. Making them worth more and better to use.
Also a colony on the moon would support and give information for future space colonies. The information gathered could go to Mars or Exoplanet colonies.
This is why I believe Moon colonies would be successful, help research, and develop technology useful for scientific goals we have set.

  • I believe the moon should be colonized

The moon should be colonized for the fact that we are running out of space on earth for all humans to live. I am sure years ago when this idea came up they would not believe that there would be so many living humans on the planet. The scientific reasons behind it could mean that we advance our species as well and help to bring in a new era of man kind that does not require all the resources we use on earth.

  • Many reasons including science to colonize the moon

While I do admit the cost of doing it makes this impossible for some time, however it will have huge scientific impacts when we do start colonizing the moon. The biggest scientific impact will be the study of how our society and we ourselves evolve on another planet, especially one with less gravity and no atmosphere. This work would then make it possible to colonize other planets in the long term future.

  • Way to expensive

We can use the money we have for something more important. The rocket itself will cost tens of billions of dollars now add on the price of fuel, transporting water , and other human necessities. It will cost a single country’s overall budget , so this will require many countries to participate together unlike the race to the lunar surface. There are many moonquakes on the moon which will destroy the colonization and harm many people . On top of that , the colonization will be very expensive to replace.

  • Unreasonable and expensive

The moon is constantly being bombared by debris being pulled in by its gravity (1/6 of ours which causes physical trauma). Also the dust on the moon is very abrasive and hard to clean which would ruin crops and machinery, also may be toxic. Lack of atmoshphere and a medium for sound to travel makes the moon completely silent. No atmosphere=more radition. The lunar day is about 29 Earth days long, which means most places on the lunar surface receive about two weeks of daylight followed by two weeks of night. This would mess up human time lines and sleep patterns along with crops and solar energy.
