Potential for Life

There are two main arguments against abortion that I have seen. The first of which calls upon the bible, and the second of which says that abortion is akin to murder. If this is so, spermicide would be akin to genocide, and every time someone fails to conceive when possible, it would also be considered a murder. As this makes absolutely no sense, I think that abortion should be allowed.

The heartbeat starts at 24 days after conception. Murder is the taking away of life. The first thing you do to check for signs of life is a pulse. Sperm does not have a pulse. This is the worst argument I have ever seen.

Your comparing apples and oranges, no one ever said that a failure to conceive is murder because there is nothing to kill.

Many individuals that are against abortion believe that life begins at conception so clearly when someone fails to conceive, there is no murder taking place.

Life begins at conception because that is when the child DNA is first created, Sperm do not have unique DNA. Abortion is murder.

I think you guys missed the point Scoeri made. Failure to conceive directly implies that millions of sperm has died. His argument that since you've killed a lot of sperm that had the potential for life, It's then murder.

If life should be defined by having a pulse, By that argument all victims whose hearts simply stopped should be declared dead instead of helped before its too late. Some peoples' hearts stop while they sleep. Does that mean they're temporarily dead in their sleep? Interesting thing about death, The human brain can still experience consciousness for a good several minutes before it degrades and dies due to no blood flow.

If life begins at conception then the life created at day one has no less complexity than the scab on a person's arm or the cheek cells in a person's mouth. It'd probably be much more of a murder to pick off or scrape far more developed skin cells on somebody's arm than it is to abort a cluster of cells.

Also saying "Sperm do not have unique DNA" is not scientifically accurate unless unique DNA means a complete set of DNA from both mom and pop. Sperm have unique DNA coming from the father. Otherwise, Why have sperm in the first place? Even more interesting, Every single individual sperm are a randomized selection from the father's genes. This makes all the sperm in one ejaculation more of a set of unique individuals than many realize.

A solid definition of life needs to be decided upon. Technically speaking, The skin cells on your body also count as life. Even then, Drawing a line of what is life and what isn't is incredibly arbitrary. The main purpose of 'drawing a line' is to prevent freak events like 'aborting' a fetus at 39 weeks into pregnancy where it's one day away from being born. Such a thing happening is hardly different than waiting for the baby to be born then stabbing it soon after.

Why does it having unique DNA matter? Many tiny living organisms have unique DNA and we don't care about their well being.

Sure the clumps of cells that make up a fetus are living, But why does that matter? Thousands of our cells die each day. They can't think or feel just like an early stage fetus can't think or feel. Its not conscience and its not something worth protecting over a woman's ability to choose. Abortion is not murder.
