I do not think that conservative politicians should distance themselves from religious organizations. I think that a lot of the people who vote for conservative politicians are those who follow a religion. These politicians cater such groups who vote. I think that distancing themselves from religion would be a big mistake.
I am a Republican who is more fiscally conservative and socially moderate. I cringe when I hear politicians sound like Southern Baptist preachers. Although the Religious Right is a sizable voting group, the reason that the Republicans have lost the last two presidential elections are that the are not in touch with the majority of voters' outlooks on social issues.
I believe conservative politicians should distance themselves from religious organizations. I believe the separation of church and state is important. I also think it is important for politicians to realize that the people who vote for them follow varying religions and aren't necessarily interested in their politicians religious views. I vote for someone based on their platforms and beliefs, not what church they are affiliated with.
Overall religious organizations generally back and support conservative candidates with votes and financial support so I think in general it's wise for a conservative politician to associate with a religious organization that wishes to help them, I think in general as long as the religious organization is not radical then there is no reason to distance themselves from them.
I do not think conservative politicians should distance themselves from religious organizations. Conservative politicians have a large constituency among the bible belt states. People who are very religious tend to support the conservative politicians. Conservative politicians usually adopt policies which are amiable to religious views and philosophies. Issues such as abortion and gay marriage are at the forefront of conservative politics.
