Every game has the potential to be art in the sense of the word. If you looked at ALL the world of gameing has to offer, no one could even think of saying games can't be. Art is the expression of human skill and imagination. Let's first look at the word "skill". People using skill to create something. Why must we hail the skill of one with a paintbrush over a programer that can write code to create things? They're the same. Now lets look at the imagination within games. Well, imagination is the whole POINT behind every game's creation.
Video Games are interactive art. It brings many other forms of art to create an amazing experience. Now yes, some games are made for the sole reason to entertain. But so is music. We don't see people at war over weather or not music is an art. Because it is. And what does nearly every video game have? Music. For some examples to back this up. Lets see rythem games. Those exist. It's whole fuction revolves around music. THAT is art. Another form of art is through visual imagery. So let's look at games like Journey, Flow, or Flower, all made by ThatGameCompany. And those are just a few. Then there is narrative through plot. Books. To say a game that is heavy in story focus such as an RPG(or JRPG for more specifics) is not art then you are saying books are not art. But they are. Video games take all theses forms of art and bring them together for that wonderful piece of(and you never saw this coming) art. What the art is depends on the creater. It depends on them weather or not their art is good or not. Because every form of art has both good and bad art in each catagory. Video games are no different. If anything they should be hailed more in the art world. Because video games bring ALL other forms of art into one, and when that is done succesfully, we should all be overjoyed and praising it because it did something no other form of art can even possibly pull off. Video games ARE art. ALL video games ARE ART. Weather or not it's good art is your opinon. But all video games are art. And if you would like to hear an example of a game that succesfully pulled off that ultimate form of video game art, here is a few that I find to be remarkable:
The legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Legend of zelda: A link to the past
Kingdom Hearts(the whole series)
Pokemon Black and White
Now for my final note. I invite everyone to add to this list. Let people know that there is more to video games then meets the eye. And if you believe you can fully destroy or counter this argument, I invite you to do so even more.
If video games were not a form of art, then why do they hire hundreds and thousands of artists every year. People who are professionally trained in design and get college degrees in art, but somehow don't create art. Does the video game give you an aesthetic experience designed by it's creators. If yes, then it's art.
Art is simply the expression of something through media. Games are also media, and they can express and large range of ideas. Not including video games as an art would be like saying photography or abstract paintings are not art. Just because video games aren't exactly like other media doesn't mean they can't be art.
The word art can be encompassing of a lot of things. Video games do fit under the description of art in the same way that television, radio, and movies do. It is not your basic art but it is still a form of art. Perhaps the issue is the word art is too encompassing.
There may be a broad blanket of the term art that you could fit video games into but for the most part when you use just the word art video games are not included. Neither are television or movies. They may be considered a type of graphic art, but they differ too much from the general term art.
Yes art is included in the realm of video games. Video games are made with quite a bit of art and people like to see the world that the artists were able to create. Art is a big deal in video games because it can make or break the game.
Art is so subjective, but it includes different types of media. Computer animated graphics are art. Some video games are so realistically drawn. Others contain beautiful shading and depth and others vibrant colors. The art in video games has changed and evolved. The Smithsonian now has an exhibit on the art of video games, and while the topic is disputed, many can see the presence of art in these games.
According to wikipedia, The definition of art is "Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, Auditory or performing artifacts, Expressing the author's imaginative, Conceptual ideas, Or technical skill, Intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power" So obviously video games are art because it's a product of human creative expression, No different than movies of paintings.
Video games are not art because they are commercial entertainment. Their content is usually based upon violent fantasies rather than artistic expression. Although the definition of art is famously vague, no art critics judge that video games can be legitimate art. There are plenty of other forms of art for people to admire.
Video games use a lot of art because the developers have to draw like in the animated movies they have to draw every frame in the game and make amazing great art when they make the game all the characters and the backround have to be animated and drawn all the time
