Emergency contraception: Does the availability of emergency contraception cause people to rely on it as an alternative to safer approaches?

  • Emergency contraception should only be used in cases of rape.

Having emergency contraception available does cause people to use it instead of taking safer precautions. Instead of using condoms, birth control pills, or IUD's, many teenagers and young adults think it is acceptable to use a morning after pill instead. This should never be the case. The morning after pill should only be used in cases of rape.

  • Emergency contraception offers women peace of mind.

Thanks to emergency contraception, women have another option available to them after an unsafe sexual encounter that they may utilize before an unwanted pregnancy can manifest. Most women who use this option will probably only use it in dire situations because it is more difficult to obtain, more expensive, and more harmful to the body than other birth control methods.
