If popularity is such a subjective thing and not "all that it's cracked up to be", why do so many spend time pursuing it?

  • Its part of nature.

For centuries, pretty much every living animal and every person has belonged to a group. Its part of survival and thriving in an environment, as we are more productive and protected in numbers. As a result of this, its part of our human nature in our genes to belong to a group. Pursuing popularity is part of thriving in a group, and feels right and instinctive.
