One common misconception about trade is that only one side can gain, while the other will always lose. This is untrue, because the only reason why the two parties would consent to trade is because they believe that they are getting more than they will give up. If free trade actually hurt one side, there would be no "trade" at all in the world, since no one will willingly accept a deal that will make them worse off.
Free trade is not going to be good for the losers. We have 50 million people on non-retirement welfare. This has not been good for them. And since the welfare is being paid by tax payers, it begs the question whether it is good for anyone in the country for the long term. What is the harm in producing domestically what is consumed domestically?
