Money from powerball goes to schools and that is good since they were way underfunded prior to receiving this money. If people can't afford powerball they shouldn't play, just like they shouldn't go to Vegas to play the slots instead of buying food for their families. It also gives hope, and fun to think about being rich.
Power Ball can be a good thing -- as long as ticket buyers are responsible about it and don't spend money they can't afford to lose. Winning the lottery is such a long shot that there's almost no chance to win the biggest Power Ball prize. If the lottery funds useful projects, it is good.
Powerball, and other lotteries, are bad for the public in general. Powerball is a form gambling that targets the segment of society that can least afford it, the poor. Lotteries prey on the hopes and desires of the poor and disadvantaged to improve the quality of their life. Taking two dollars from someone on a 1-in-295 million bet is obscene.
Considering how many people lose money playing Power Ball I don't think it's a good idea. It's a bad strategy to try to get rich. The odds are stacked against you and the government rakes in money. It's a huge scheme by the governments to fleece their citizens. I'd be happy if it was banned.
