Is there a distinct separation between social and monetary values?

  • Planned Obsolescence in modern America is the decision that a business should keep going even if it means turning out less effective products.

There was once a business called Shelby Electric that bad light bulbs that were so good no one needed to buy replacements. The business closed down as sales dropped. The company made several light bulbs that have lasted over 100 years of constant use.
Modern light bulbs do not last this long. Why? Businesses are more concerned with making money by selling replacement bulbs than they are with social concerns - that people have reliable lights that don't need replacement.
