    Throughout the years, the Republican Party has not been big on arms reduction for the army or United States citizens. Some members of the party support the new START Treaty, but most of them oppose the treaty to some degree. Arms reduction goes in the face of the basic tenets of the Republican Party after all.

Republicans believe that voluntary arms reductions show weakness, and that the only way to demonstrate strength is by showing the ability to defend the country from attack. The Republicans believe that developing weapons capabilities sends this message.
