Do you think hijab is oppressing women?Posted by: skravlekassen
It's common for Muslim women to covering themselves in veils and other covering outfits where the norm is to not showing their hair or too much skin. Only women covering themselves in Islam and it's different rules for men.
Most women in the world are wearing hijab as required by their husband, father, family at large, community, government, religion, or custom, and not by personal choice.
I think it certainly oppressing most woman, except the ones who live in the west and use it as a symbol of identity. While I was in Egypt, I witness a girl in my class who always wore a hijab take it off before class with eyes full of brave tears, and then confidently walk in and sit down. She finally spoke during class. It was amazing and beautiful. And no, here hair did not distract me or give me urges to sexualize her.
The hijab is oppressive by design. How else can it not be. In Islamic countries, you will get hurt physically if you don't wear one. Once Islam hits critical mass it implements shariah law and there won't be anyone to oppose it. We don't have skyrocketing FGMs and mandatory hijab wearing in the west because it is just some big misunderstanding on Liberals' part.
It seems to me that it would depend on where you live. In the USA, It is often considered empowering. It helps one identify with a group. As the woman probably has a say in whether she wears it, Her choosing to would not be oppression. In areas where it is dictated by law, Or punished by the moral police, It would, At least from my Westerners view, Be oppressive.
the bible talks about how a womans hair is their covering. Unless women are bald, The hijib is unnecessary. And even then there can be other forms of coverings, Like wigs.
The act of wearing a hijab is in itself not oppressive unless someone is forced to wear it against their will. It is someone's personal decision to wear it, and that affects no one. Whether it's for religious or cultural reasons, no one has the right to tell anyone what they can or can't wear. To assume that all women who wear a hijab are oppressed is islamophobic and small-minded thinking. The worst is when someone tries to rip off a woman's hijab; it's not helpful, it's very rude.

Not wearing hijab is oppressing women.
I don't believe the Hijab is oppressive to women, but I do believe it puts a certain pressure on women. It's hard to fit in when everyone is staring at you because you don't look like everyone else.
simply the act of wearing a hijab is not oppressive; it is a choice.
Not if they want to wear it. People should have the right to wear whatever they want.
Everyone who picked 'yes' are idiots. Women choose to wear hijab. They either do, or don't. As long as they cover themselves, it's alright. Hijab is even becoming so fashionable nowadays, surely normal people would know that Hijab is obviously a choice? So if Christian Nuns wear black robes it's devotion, but if Muslim women wear Hijab it's oppression? Please thing people. Muslim women are more devoted to their religion. It's not oppression.
I'm very open to other cultures, so I can really respect a woman who is brave enough to make the choice to wear their hijab. I personally think the idea of a hijab could be oppressive in certain situations, but it's that woman's choice to do so, not mine.
Many choose to wear it as a symbol of their religion, piety, and devotion.
No, Some women actually need to fight for the right to wear a hijab from people who consider it opression. If you are forced to wear it then thats dfferent but if it is out of your own choice then of course
The hijab is a statement of a woman's religion. I realize that in some countries people don't have choice of religion but, in developed countries, women wear a hijab because they chose Islam as their religion. Not because somebody made them wear it.
Most women in Islam aren't forced to wear a hijab, if they are it's usually their parents who are forcing them.
Hijabs are for modesty and many women chose to wear them. Now a days girls and women wait until they’re ready to wear it. The hijab is worn only need to be worn in front of men who are strangers to protect them so (DANGEROUS) men won’t be attracted to attack. Men also have to follow rules for dressing.
It's about choice. They want to wear it, they can wear it. Who care's if it's 'right' or 'wrong' if it makes them happy, I'm happy. The problem is if they don't want to wear it.... that is a problem
I am a Muslim woman, And I made the choice on my own to wear hijab. No one forced me, And no one will force me to take it off. I love hijab
