Yes, but it is not institutionalized racism, there is a difference. Some people are prejudice against whites but it doesn't have as much of an impact and is not even very common.

Unless you are white and lived in a country where the majority is not, like Japan or some other Asian countries.
discomfiting says2014-04-15T10:29:47.1672851-05:00
Institutionalized or not; common or not, it's still wrong.
Pfalcon1318 says2014-04-15T10:31:48.8116377-05:00
Actually brian, social racism does have as much of an impact, sometimes even more so. "Institutionalized racism" is actually way over-exaggerated, and blacks (of which i am one) always wanting to play the "It's 'cus I'm black!" card is ingrained within our culture, and winds up being more damaging than this belief that blacks always get the shaft in courts, which incidentally, is over-exaggerated as well.

Yes, I was hoping someone other than myself would say that.
Pfalcon1318 says2014-04-15T10:36:58.8049664-05:00
@Discomfiting; it's not even less common; it's way MORE common. But of course the whole "It isn't very prevalent so it isn't important" mindset is ingrained.

@Abyteofbrain, you were hoping someone would say what?
discomfiting says2014-04-15T10:42:27.4641316-05:00
I know it's not less common. I was just saying to "but it doesn't have as much of an impact and is not even very common". I see racism against whites on Tumblr, on Facebook, on the news media, and a lot of places.
SamStevens says2014-04-15T10:43:26.0893074-05:00
Of course there is racism against whites, just like there is racism towards Australian aborigines, Africans, Asians, and many other types of people.
abyteofbrain says2014-04-15T10:43:56.3719366-05:00
Yes I was, until now, I thought I was the only one who realized that.
Disquisition says2014-04-15T10:48:46.9833644-05:00
If you are speaking of outright racism then yes, that happens to all racial and ethnic groups. However is you are referring to reverse racism then that's debatable.
Juan_Pablo says2014-04-15T10:58:48.9444231-05:00
Yes it does; but so does envy and a desire to be like them, physically and culturally! Minorities at the present moment and in the recent past have had it worse than whites hands down!
Juan_Pablo says2014-04-15T11:01:45.0539520-05:00
Anyway, all forms of racism are wrong!
Pfalcon1318 says2014-04-15T11:03:09.9786887-05:00
@Disquisition, I never understood the word "reverse racism". The only thing it can really mean is preference/bias for a different race, rather than prejudice towards/bias against. I don't really think it is debatable though, by that definitiion.
Juan_Pablo says2014-04-15T11:06:52.2199210-05:00
From what I have observed in my life, racism stems from a desire to have elevated power over others based on race. It's a fairly evil, selfish compulsion . . . But it's especially dangerous when it's allowed to infect the nation's laws!
Juan_Pablo says2014-04-15T11:08:47.7386615-05:00
People have fought and died to stop de jure racism and to ensure that every person, no matter the background, is treated as an equal in society under the law. I too would be willing to lay down my life to prevent de jure racism from infecting this nation's laws!
Pfalcon1318 says2014-04-15T11:11:24.6756675-05:00
JuanPablo, what metric are you using to make that statement? Can you explain how whites have had it better, or are you just lumping the entire white population into upper-middle class, well-off American white folk? Because it totally makes sense to lump all of the white population in with the white male elite.... (which it always seems people want to do in race and gender relations)
Juan_Pablo says2014-04-15T11:18:33.2508627-05:00
Over the last 500 years, white Europeans have the history of invading and colonizing non-European lands, occupied by non-European people, enslaving others, taking their resources, denying them equal status and perceiving them as lower members of the human race, both culturally and physically. Only recently (in the last 100 years) have minorities begun to be treated as equals in all aspects of life--but this has been accompanied with conflict and the realized need for social activism. In general, whites have had much better than minorities in the past . . . Though things are certainly changing now.
IAlwaysLoseDebates says2014-04-15T11:20:18.2381897-05:00
There is racism towards every race. People are competitive, and one way to show that they are better than another person is using race. I am white and I think that racism shouldn't exist. People think that it isn't common towards white people even know it is. I have been called racist names that were not meant to be taken as a joke. Also in areas like prisons , whites are racist to blacks, blacks to whites, and almost every other race, but it is more of a protection thing. I don't want to get into that though. I just wanted to say that racism towards every race is common, and should be noticed.

Improvement is happening because no group likes to be treated as inferior . . . It's a true we all have to come to grips with and keep ourselves alert to! We all want to be treated as equals, and its safe to say that this trend will continue to exert on society to ensure that it happens.

Correction: Improvement is happening because no group likes to be treated as inferior . . . It's a truth we all have to come to grips with and keep ourselves alert to! We all want to be treated as equals, and its safe to say that this sociological pressure will continue to exert itself on society to ensure that it happens.

Juan_Pablo: So because Europeans have been documented as having invaded, and colonized, other Non-European countries, that makes them better off? I don't really see how that implies whites have always been better off.... The issue is that there is very little discussion and knowledge regarding the prosperity of Non-whites. Perhaps in America your statement is true, but elsewhere, you are making a leap in logic from "More powerful nation, with more funding and resources invaded a smaller, less powerful, unfunded country" to "Europeans invading non-European countries." Colonialism doesn't really contain any inherent racism. Everything that you mentioned is trying to take a correlation and create causation, which simply isn't the case. Granted,, at least in America, there was obvious de jure and de facto racism; this does not imply it was the case everywhere. Especially when those European countries would actually PAY non-european countries to enslave a small group of said countries population. (That is the beginning of American slavery btw)
Juan_Pablo says2014-04-15T11:46:10.8632444-05:00
Yes it has made them better off. By invading and conquering, whites have established the laws, distributed the rights, and claimed land that minorities were subjected to and had no power to repel--except through war and social activism. Whites laid down a culture in every case where they were given rights and privileges that no other race had. It happened here in the Americas, it happened in Australia, it happened in South, North, and Western Africa, it happened in India, it happened in the Philippines and in China. Only as recently as the 1980s were black Africans given full rights and equality in South Africa with the end of apartheid. Before that blacks didn't even have the right to vote! In recent history Whites have been enormously privileged when compared to non-whites. It may be something that upsets you, by historical fact is fact and its time to come to grips with it so that motives behind it are never allowed to happen again!

Whoever says no has no common sense, that or they're bigoted.
Pfalcon1318 says2014-04-16T11:01:58.8442364-05:00
Juan_Pablo, it seems to me that you are trying to make the issue about race, when it never really was. "Minorities" were not even a thing back in the colonial era. Minorities only exist now because there was so much shifting of peoples. "White people laying down a culture" has less to do with the fact that they are white, and more to do with their lack of understanding of different cultures. I don't see how you can make that leap in logic from Colonialism to Racism, without first thinking about the reasons for Colonialism in the first place. You talk about Europeans, but seem to forget that a lot of the things Europeans did were done by these "minorities" you speak of as well. You also forget the fact that Middle Eastern countries also have a long history of imperialism, as do some African Nations. You talk about privilege, but seem to want to lump the rich white people with the poor ones, which is often what politically correct people try to do. The so-called "Social Justice Warriors". Rather than looking at the things that are factual, everything is assumed to be about race. Is it more likely that Europeans wanted land for the sake of having land, money and power, or is it likely that they were simply targeting a group of people that were different from them? You have to remember that poor whites face most, if not all, of the problems that non-whites do. The only whites that can be said to have a large amount of privilege are those of the upper-middle class and higher.

Only in non western societies. In America, no, you cannot be racist against the ones in power.
