I completely think it is. If we took this away, we would be infringing on our freedom of the press, limiting the amount of knowledge we can take in.

There aren’t many careers that a bachelor’s degree in philosophy will give you specific training for. But there are very many different kinds of careers that philosophy majors go into after receiving their bachelor’s degrees. The study of philosophy develops many skills, including:
• critical thinking
• evaluation of chains of reasoning
• construction of chains of reasoning
• consideration of many different perspectives on a single subject
• clear written communication on complex topics
and these are skills that will serve you well no matter what you end up doing.
After graduation, philosophy majors go to law school, to medical school, to business school, to seminary, and to graduate school in a range of fields from art business to education to gender studies to philosophy; they go to work for business consulting firms and for humanitarian non-government organizations; they take jobs as technical writers, teachers, web designers

Philosophy is an amazing topic that really explores the knowledge of the ancient people and there minds. If you like philosophy then you should research the ancient mysteries schools. They are some of the greatest philosophy schools of the ancient times that tried to teach man how to become gods and elevate their minds to a higher truth.

For one, we should all be moral people and philosophy get us thinking about larger actions beyond ourselves. Also, it's important to recognize ideas beyond ourselves and our modern day society to have unique and creative ideas daily and in policy.

It is a very useful subject for anyone to take. It teaches critical thinking and helps you examine your own motives for things. As well as helping you think about things in a different way.

It is as useful as science. They both help us understand reality. They are useful in so much as they help you find the Truth.

Philosophy courses are worthy subjects and intrinsically valuable. On the other hand, to major in philosophy is nearly useless for society (other than maintaining a steady supply of detached, socially irrelevant professors in ivory towers). Philosophy will not be able to prevent the rapidly approaching collapse of western civilization, nor will it likely lead to a better new civilization to replace it after the dust has settled. As such, philosophy has become a vacuous, hollow whisper in the wind to be blown away by the coming series of hurricanes. The gentle breeze of philosophy cannot compete against the approaching storm of ugliness and desperation that the uncultured, ignorant, and generally stupid teeming masses of humanity are to bring.

As a person that has studied philosophy for the past two years, I feel as if it didn't "open my mind", as people say. How does having to recite what Plato or Aristotle thought improve my life in any way? Some philosophers have down right outrageous ideas e.g. existence is a characteristic of God, therefore he must exist - said by Descartes, which is basically him arguing in a circle. Finally, philosopher does NOT answer questions, the main focus is to answer more questions, which anyone can do with little or no knowledge of the famous philosophers. On the other hand, discussing issues like privacy, cyberspace and euthanasia (included in the philosophy syllabus) can be done by anyone. Therefore, I encourage people to start discussing these issues even if they do not have a philosophy background, because truth be told, it's not very useful since anyone can be able to discuss and debate rationally.

While it can influence a person to think, for the most part, it influences a sort of "herd mentality". Students are taught philosophers' ideologies and sometimes aren't actually allowing them to think for themselves. Of course, this type of subject might be useful to a person who's trying to learn the arts of debate etc. perhaps for a future career...but in most cases, not useful at all.
