Both of the major candidates are crazy extremists, making it impossible for moderates to decide which candidate is less evil.

I think the biggest problem is that people see big establishments that are backed by very wealthy companies that will do anything to get their selected candidates in office, and so they feel as if their vote doesn't mean anything, that is one of the reasons why Bernie Sanders is doing so well, it's because he is convincing the people who once saw it as pointless to try to get anyone who isn't an establishment candidate, who has the backing of lobbyist to win, and is telling them that their vote counts, and the people should be the deciders of how the country is ran.
