Rock > Everything Well, for one, practically everyone knows songs like Queen's "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions," Ozzy's "Crazy Train," Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," and Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is." They're great songs that almost anyone, even pop fans, could sing word for word, because they're still widely known and used to this day.
Two, the variety of sub-genres. Yes, I know, "pop has a wide variety of sub-genres too." But, really, do you listen to many of those? And half of them are other country's pop... 'Russian Pop,' 'Swedish Pop,' etc... But, with rock, there's pretty much guaranteed to be a large cult following behind every single sub-genre, for example, there's are a large number of punk rock fans, hard rock fans, soft rock fans, electronic rock fans, etc...
And with each of our sub-genres comes more unique, awesome songs... i.e. [ELO]Electric Light Orchestra's "Mr. Blue Sky," "Telephone Line," or "Don't Bring Me Down" are all great songs, much different from what most people normally think of rock (Lots of guitar/riffs, maybe some yelling/loud singing somewhere in the mix).
