It is necessary Cursive is vital to anyone's learning. Sure, you might say typing is more efficient. It's much faster. And maybe better depending on what it is you're doing. An essay, for example, would be faster to get down typed. But what about simple class notes? I know of a lot of students who prefer typing because they can write down everything the teacher says, without wasting time. I also know of a lot of students who prefer cursive (it's faster than print) and they have good reason. Writing in cursive forces you to put what the teacher says in your own words and write in shorthand to avoid missing information. By rephrasing what the teacher sais, even subconsciously, as you're taking notes means you are truely learning the material. This is because, as many studies have shown, when you can explain something in your own words, then you know it. And if you are constantly doing this as you get the information, it's as if you are instantly memorizing most of the material. Okay, it's slower, but students are much more likely to remember the material. So, should we compromise our education for the sake of time?
