It should be legal because we have a right to bodily autonomy, but this doesn't mean that people should choose to undergo gender reassignment surgery We should embrace the bodies we were born with. Maybe instead of changing their bodies in order to feel right and whole, transgenders should work on accepting themselves as a whole-- body, mind, spirit and all. Maybe the real problem lies with their lack of self-acceptance for the body that God gave them. Feminists argue that women should accept their bodies and shouldn't try to take on dangerous diets in order to achieve a picture perfect body. Should people considering transgender reassignment surgery physically alter their bodies to gain self-acceptance?
I do not believe we should necessarily make it illegal because people have to right to bodily autonomy; however, those that are considering gender reassignment surgery should know that there are medical implications regarding such a drastic physical change. Another concern are the hormones being prescribed to these individuals. We are still uncertain about how such strong chemicals affect the body over a lifetime. Why mar a perfectly healthy body when you can work on and learn to truly love and accept yourself for all that you are?
