Considering the salaries of truly essential and inherently dangerous careers that exist. What really annoys me is the argument that a single injury can end a professional athletes career, well that truly applies to any career? Does it not! Also how many athletes receive signing bonuses and league minimum salaries that amount to more than many average people will make in their whole working life. Let alone the time off an athlete will receive. How often it is heard of athletes retiring multi millionaires at the ripe old age of 40? Or younger. How many average people start their careers hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt , and for many so they can serve people? Athletes are simply entertainment not a necessity of life? Food for thought. An elite hockey player plays on average , 21 minutes in a 3 hour game. Average 4 games a week. That's around a hour and half a week. Now let's add practices of let's say 1 hour game days and 3 hours ( not likely this long) non game days , that's a whopping 19 hours a week. For the measly millions they must accept. Such sacrifice ? Or the argument that their families sacrifice while they are away, I know of lots of people that are required to be away from home for longer periods of time than any professional athlete. And will never have the free time the athlete has during the off season. A pro hockey player missing the playoffs, to just when the playoffs end , alone will have more time off than an average person does in 3 years. Over paid? Well let's see? For what ticket prices go for and the hours of often tedious unrewarding labor the average person works to purchase these tickets to watch multi millionaires play minutes a game? If they show up that night. Too often you get that half hearted effort or the excuse their exhausted from all that catering to. I would bet if you asked any athlete, you have a choice? Dig a ditch 9 to 10 hours a day , 5, 6 days a week for 50,000.00 or your sport ? What you think they would choose?
