  • Shorter days in class, More days in school

As it stands now, The first few weeks of any school year are wasted just trying to reteach what was lost or forgotten during the summer. Meanwhile, Medical studies have found that children and adolescents need much more sleep per night than they are typically getting. If we extend the school year to make summer break no more than a month long while also starting classes an hour later, We could drastically increase the learning potential of the students. And a well educated populous is good for everybody.

  • More stress for both students and teachers

If the school year had less days then that would mean longer summer and less the students would remember. The first month of the year would just be the teachers teaching the kids things they already know and the school year would be total chaos. Students might think the longer summer would be a good thing but having nothing to do all day could lead to people doing stupid things. Teachers are stressed enough with the school day length as it is now. Why make it longer and stress them more. Think about the teachers.

  • More days and hours.

So far, Students only need to spend about 1, 000 hrs in class per year. This is half of what the typical adult spends at a full time job. This means that many parents need to get someone to watch their young kids while they are still at work. Unless you can find a good friend, Neighbor, Or family member to watch you kid(s), Odds are the money you make at work for those hours goes right to paying for childcare. If we extend the number of hours we would save parents hundreds maybe thousands per year.
Students would also benefit from this. Some of the countries with the highest test scores have many more class hours. Some even have school 6 days a week, 11 or more months per year.
The only real issue is how to pay for the extended hours. There are several unnecessary things that can be cut from schools. Various art programs including music are not likely careers for the vast majority of students so we can save money by getting rid of them. Being on a pro sports team is also highly unlikely so we can get rid of school sports teams. That alone would give schools the opportunity to sell or lease lands that sports fields once occupied. Seeing that these areas are in a high value area (close to schools), They can expect to get top dollar. It would make a good spot to build apartment buildings so many students could just walk next door to attend class.
