    People have agreed to give up their privacy in the terms of service and then they want the government to come save them after they were being stupid with their data? The government can only do so much to protect citizens and when they give up their rights they willingly do it. They should have read the contract

It is not a question of whether gov should in reality. We all know in the real life instead of debate or any other kind of mind experiments that gov can't be left out on almost every big issue concerning people's life. So what the question suggests is that which is more harmful compared putting the data in the hands of gov or companies. And in this vein, We could have a debate.
