While the GOP stance of illegal immigrants being the worst thing on earth isn't fair, there are thorough but easy to understand procedures to be a legal immigrant into the United States. It's simple, do it the right way or face the consequences if you don't and get caught. Illegal immigrants don't pose the massive threat some want you to think that they do, but it doesn't mean we should condone breaking the law to get here.
For decades, through Democratic and Republican administrations, the Federal Government has neglected its responsibility to secure our borders and stop illegal immigrants. This is because generally Republicans support the cheap labor brought by these immigrants, while Democrats support the demographic changes which mean more favorable votes for them in the future. The average American however only suffers through depressed wages, increased crime, and a strain on social services. It's time for America to finally do what is right for average Americans and stop welcoming illegal immigrants.
The US should protect their own citizens and documented immigrants first in order to assure their minimum but safe lives before paying attention to illegal immigrants. But this does not mean the US harshly treat undocumented immigrants. They should be deported but with respect and dignity. Besides, the US should improve their regulation to accept speedily people who want to come to the US for their safety.
They are people too and they are looking to us as the land of opportunity. Ellis Island once served as the station where immigrants from around the world came for a better life - for a life of opportunity. These immigrants today come for the same reason. They need our help and support - should we turn them away?
