  • Humanity must evolve and look towards creating a meaningful future.

We as humanity must rise above simple and self destructive pride and create a new language all together. Pride has left humanity spiteful, ignorant and venegful. We are better than that. The old languages are fine to be kept and used. But one must be forged that takes the best elements of each language and be implemented into the world over. To create one that provides humans with an efficient yet emotionally rich language, that is respectful to both conversing parties. Majority, of all forms of human conflict are the result of miscommunication. The misuse of words and the meaning of words being different to different people because of a language barrier.

  • Hang English, hang Spanish, hang 'em all, and hang 'em high!

I like to think I have the heart of a child, but the mind of an adult, (or young adult) so hear me out. As we speak, ROBOTS are developing THEIR OWN LANGUAGE. I for one, say we should all learn that one and stick with it. Have a good day.

  • Yes, it's English

Many people already know English, and I would personally consider it the "universal language" because it is mandatory to learn in many nations. As it is the most widely spoken language across the globe, it seems to me that it is already widely accepted as the language of business/diplomacy. However, we could not force this on everybody, but I don't think that it would really bring us together all that much. Humans have been fighting each other since the beginning of time, and language won't change that.

  • Yes, but it should be universally taught as a second language

I think being able to communicate with anyone from around the globe sounds like a great idea. It could well aid to bridge the gaps between nations and help unite humanity under one banner. However, it should definitely be brought in as a second language. To bring in a universal language as a first mandatory language is impracticable and would never work. People would resists it and would be right to do so. People should have the freedom to speak their own language first, and then use a universal language second to communicate with any foreign national.

  • Yes, a universal language would be a great advancement

This isn't really hard to defend. Why would a universal language not be helpful? It would streamline communication of ideas and thoughts, make education much easier, and aid travelers. This would be a great achievement for humankind, the first step towards world unity. It would also aid in the acceptance and knowledge of foreign cultures. Although that being said, people should also keep their own languages for a sense of identity and uniqueness in the world and to stop the stamping out of cultures.

  • Common language united people.

People with common ideals, religion, and culture are more connected and less likely to engage in warfare. The United States have a common language and they are our closest ally, although, it wasn't always this way. A universal language would help unify Earth. This would end wars as long as the unified government was good. This would be great because we could unite and my Star Trek dreams could come true! I definitely wouldn't want English to be it. We need a new language all together based on the same principles as the mertic system was made with: logical, simple, and understandable.

  • I believe there should be a Universal Language.

A Universal Language would help unify the world. This does not mean that current languages would have to be forgotten or ignored but this language would create branches between countries that previously shared no similarities. It would also encourage the creation of a One World Nation, of which I am a strong believer.

  • Yes, a universal language would better unify the world's cultures.

Although I do not think all native tongues should be discarded in favor of such a universal language, it would be best for all of humanity to have a common language with which to communicate. Imagine if mankind did come to a consensus on a world language. Cultures would no longer be separated by linguistic barriers. History would be easier to keep track of. Diplomacy would become more convenient. The overall effect of everyone being able to speak the same language would be a certain harmony between humans that enables us to better cooperate with each other, thus letting us achieve more as a species. Ideally, we could preserve our native/regional languages while all learning a secondary, universal language. In the long run, it's the best course of action for the human race.

  • It's a sense of pride.

I don't think you understand why a person's language is important to them.
It's what keeps countries apart, it's what makes a country. People who are proud of their country, and likely to be proud of the language that comes with it.
I'm proud to speak Traditional English, one of the richest and oldest languages in the world, and I would be less than happy if I had to convert to French, or Chinese just because somebody said so.

  • The question is a little meaningless

It doesn't make sense to 'impose' any kind of universal language because there is no one with the power to do so and good luck getting the French to agree!

And given that most people don't even know their own 'native' languages very well, I don't think this plan could even be implemented.

  • No one wants to learn a new language.

People are lazy, languages are hard and time consuming to learn. To simply put it, no one wants to learn a new language, put all that time and effort into something that they are perfectly happy to keep the same. There already was a universal language, Esperanto, it failed, I don't see how anything will be different now.

  • No no !

How on earth are you going to teach so many people to speak a different language like think how long it takes to teach one person a language now put this in perspective unless you see straight through this actually making it work is definitely impossible thank you very much!

It destroys cultures. No no no no no . No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no. This is very very bad. Also more languages are better for education. It is interesting knowing and hearing and knowing different languages. There are many languages that are main to a lot of cultures.

  • People should be unique

A universal language would take away some diversity and some cultures. Also, some people may think that it isn't fair that one language is more spoken than theirs. It may also, be hard for some people to speak the language. It may also, change the way of thinking in others.

  • No, because it's impossible for one language to work for every culture.

The world is incredibly diverse. Mandarin is the world's most spoken language, but it's part of one of the least-spoken language family trees, Sino-Tibetan. Arabic, another popular language and one of the official United Nations languages, is part of the Afro-Asiatic family. Slavic and African languages also fall into different language families. Meanwhile, languages like English, French, Spanish, German, and Portuguese are spoken by millions, and are part of the Indo-European. Creating a universal language that is accessible to so many different language families is a major hurdle, and would lead to severe sacrifices of culture.

  • No, because of cultural relativism.

Cultural relativism is the belief that no culture is"better" than another. Language being a part of culture, whose to choose one language over 65,000 other? My family speaks five languages, all at different extents and difficulties, but we do it because of our family history. If I were asked to, I couldn't choose one over the others. It just wouldn't make sense to erase the other branches of my blood history. It wouldn't make sense to wipe out belief systems because a party is too lazy to take a day or two to learn an auxiliary language.
